Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Tonight at the store my dd (8 1/2) asked me what pads were & why I buy them. I told her I wanted to think of my answer & how best to explain it so I would answer her tomorrow.

How would you answer her? I am going to answer her tomorrow, that was not a put off or "I hope she forgets to ask". I really do need the time to think of my answer.

Here it's been fairly natural to tie it into where the baby grows inside the mommy.. since we homebirth and the kids have gotten to see the placenta and such.. it's rather a natural outtake of that to explain about the place inside mommy where the baby grows.. getting ready each month so that if a baby starts to grow the placenta can attach.. and if not, then all the extra isn't needed.

My little girls follow me around everywhere...including the bathroom ...so they've already asked about pads.

I did the same as Jodie...just told them that a period is what happens when Mommy is not pregnant. I told them that my womb gets ready for a baby each month, and if a baby doesn't come to live there, then the lining in the womb sheds off and that's what a period is. I also made sure to tell them that it doesn't hurt (I think they were kind of shocked the first time they walked in and saw the blood).

I told my 7 1/2 year old daughter, that once a month, my body gets ready for the possibility of a new baby. It gets ready with a nice soft lining and lots of good nutrition and oxygen and blood just in case a new baby decides to live there. If that does not happen that month, then my body just gets rid of all of that lining to make a new one for the next month. She accepted that.

I also told her that when it started happening to her, I would be there to help her through it.

She seemed Okay with all of it and just went to play after that!

I have to ditto what everyone else has said....My now 6.5 yr old started asking questions about what certain produts were for...and since we had already talked about how there was not ALWAYS a baby growing in my stomach, it was a pretty natural segue into the preparations that a woman's body makes...

I told her it was like a nest...that just like baby birds need a good nest, little babies need a "nest" too, til they are big enough to be on their own more.

It doesn't hurt that we have seen numerous nests, and lots of eggs and baby birds around our yard.

My mom told me, "I'll tell you when you need to know." That was enough for me and she told me in 5t grade. I have a friend who pretty much said this:

except that she phrased it in terms of a gift. Each month God gives us the gift of being able to accept a baby. If we choose not to accept the gift, then the preperations our body has made are not needed and lets them go. She phrased it much better, but I love the idea of associating your period and "gift".
