I am finding school tough - is it Feb? We are all morning people - but it seems that nobody can get out of bed in the morning, breakfast drags on and half the day is over before we think of school. I have changed things to make it easier - a series of unit studies and rabbit trails, but everyone (including myself) seems a bit slow and unmotivated. Anyone else finding this? Any solutions? We are doing the basics - but it seems a bit joyless.

Hmmm... February is always tough I'd say. I just let it flow. Yes it's hard getting out of bed and getting everyone moving. So be it. Before you know it March will be here and Spring is right around the corner...at least that what "Phil" told us!

When this happens to us we read...read...read.We head to the library and everyone gets something that interests them and I look over lists of living history books and we go from there.
It is amazing that when we are reading outloud how everyone joins in discussing the historical events and everyone seems to learn something new. It makes me feel like we are still learning.

In a word...
yes!
We're struggling lately, in a big way. DH has been working lots of (forced) overtime and it's really taking a toll on us, I believe. Hopefully it'll get better soon!

I think that is my life, Marilyn, not just Feb!
Just call me an unschooler by default!
BTW, Welcome, Joann, to the boards!! Love your advice!! You will fit in quite nicely here!
I only have 6 kids......3dd and 3ds...even, just like you!
seriously, marilyn......it is always worse this time of year.....can you take a couple of field trips to brighten things up? How about a natural history museum? A nature walk once a week on a dry day, followed by tea time?
Praying for all of us as we trudge thru the month......

It's called the February Funk.
Nicola Martinez wrote about it in The Catholic Homeschool Companion edited by Maureen Wittmann.

Well, February is not hard at all school-wise if you've given up on schooling while 3 out of 4 of your dc are sick!

candles.. lots and lots of warm/cozy/yummy smelling cheerful candles..
when I lived on the N. California coast, it was amazing how much nicer it felt when you'd have dreary day after dreary day, just by lighting a couple of candles.
We've also been know to crank up the heat (wood stove makes it cost effective) crank up some summery music (calypso, Jimmy Buffet, whatever) and have a luau

Ugh! I know what you mean totally. Early pregnancy yuckies don't help at all either. Each morning I wake up and try, so hard, but there is no excitement in the learning here right now either.

When I am talking to new hs'ing moms, I usually advise them to set a little of their book budget aside for some new stuff in Feb. New books, games, DVDs, music... whatever will perk up the days with a new interest.
A box of new Dover coloring books were a big, inexpensive, hit here.

Yep, even though I love the winter, I find February hard. We've been hit with one cold/virus/bug after the other. I find it is the worst when I try to push on as if nothing is different.
Like today - I have a wicked head cold, it is snowing/sleeting (the town cancelled school) and it is Valentine's Day. I just announced to my husband before he left for work - we're taking a "snow day!" I might even contemplate a short winter break next week ...

I'm with ya, Dawn. I think the kids need a break as much as we do. Though...with all the snow they will be shoveling today, they may wish they were doing school work instead .

I think we are having a "sleep day" - I have just had a lovely couple of hours playing tent, reading and dozing in my bed with my little guy. The older ones took a look out of their windows at all the ice and snow and pulled the blankets over their heads!!
Our Real Learning today may be - making chicken soup, baking scones, shovelling the paths and driveway, playing Knockout (thanks Elizabeth for the recommendation), playing with our new Odyssey 3 interactive globe, finishing our Valentine project, having a jam session with our Putamayo cds (makes me feel like I am in Jamaica or somwhere exotic) and finishing Understood Betsy. Also listening to Charlotte's Web on CD.

Ugh...same here! We crave being outside!
We did get a reprieve though -- two snow days in a row means that Daddy is home from school!! Lots of playing outside for the boys! (And laundry folding for me! )
