Why is it my 4 year old seems to have more energy after dinner? The rest of us are all full and want to have some quiet time and he is loud ALL over the place.  Oh if I only had 1/2 of his energy.

Thats what happens when you feed them. They are refueled.

Wow--so it isn't just mine. Mine is dd though.
It is about time she woke up. Ds was go, go, go from birth. She has been quiet, mellow and fairly low maintenence in the energy department--til recently. Also, it seems her eating rev's up around 3pm and stops around 9pm! NO breakfast for her Small lunch and then we start feeding frenzy...
I have found a 15 minute game of hide and seek seems to get some wiggles out for her to settle for bed. Would have never worked for ds though--too wind up. If I can just make it through those 15 minutes though....I am soooo tired by this time of the night..off to hide

Our children are flyin' in the evenings too - I don't know what it is - maybe the fact they have been in most of the day and haven't thoroughly run off all that energy!

I struggle with this nightly, around 7-8 pm! My 3 and 5 year olds, in particular, but my 11yo also because he often is the one who gets them wound up. My 1 year old gets wound up even later than the others, around 10 or so.
Sometimes I feel more like a zookeeper than a Mom!

So what are some ideas to help calm them down.
We do a bath (almost nightly) because Andrew (4) loves to play in there. After getting out we have a snack (is this my problem?) and then read a story or two or three or four. However many he can convince me to read.

No advice here... the best wrestling matches between my boys always seem to begin after dinner. Although the nights that Daddy's not home is definitely calmer...one less wrestler!

Over here, all I have to do is say, "It's bedtime. Everyone go get ready for bed." and it triggers -- without fail -- a "bouncing off the walls" reaction in my children.  I think that they strive to contain their after dinner energy until that point, and then they burst. Obviously we have no advice!

Like Maryan, I think I can pinpoint it to Daddy's presence. My son bounces off the walls when Daddy is home. Daddy usually does bathtime and it becomes a huge playtime...nothing like I think a bath is a calming, soothing, helpful way to prepare for bed.
But the Father-Son time is just too precious to complain.
