Another round of colds and upper resp. symptoms have hit home and it's time for another pot of chicken soup. I'd like to come up with a really perfect medicinal chicken soup; great for soothing cold symptoms but also for post-partum moms and miscarriages.
I have the broth simmering with a chopped onion and several stalks of celery. I'll add the garlic at the end so as to not cook it much. Also, I found out recently that barley is high in iron, so I'll be adding about 1/2 cup.
What else would you like to add? I'll be going out for bulk herbs and fresh garlic later today, so don't hold back!

A hot pepper or piece of hot sausage and a piece of the rind of romano or parm cheese (remove before serving). I also add chopped raw spinach or swiss chard to the bottom of the bowl before adding the hot soup, cooks it just enough.

Oooo--great Viv! I forgot this: please point out the health value (Viv what is the cheese rind for?) of the ingredients.

I always float slices of limes (or lemons) on the soup in the bowls. Additional Vitamin C never hurts!

Cheese rind deepens the flavor a la Cook's Illustrated and it is thrifty--after all that bit of rind is too small to grate without major blood loss

No real big additions on the soup end...we make a chicken, garlic (lots), carrot, celery, mushroom, ginger and rice soup when illness strikes that really helps. Mandarin oranges and honey lemon tea would be additional menu choices here!
Hope you feel better real soon!

I am making a big pot of chicken barley for a good friend that lost her baby last week. :( She's not feeling very well physically, and really needs some good healthy food. I'm using many of these suggestions, swiss chard, cheese rind (just happen to have just a sliver, so perfect!) and lemon slices. I also made some squash dinner rolls with flax seed. Thanks so much for all of the inspiration.

Thanks everyone!
Lisa,
I ended up adding parsley to my soup also, because I found out it aids the digestion of the iron in the barley.
May I please have the recipe for the rolls?
