Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello ladies,

I was hoping someone here lives (lived) in Iowa, more specifically the Des Moines area. My DH has been offered an opportunity to buy a business in the area. We currently live in IL, and I know the homeschooling laws are different in IA, but I am not sure how they exactly work. Also, I am having trouble finding any Catholic homeschool groups in the area. This would make us very sad as we belong to a very dynamic group here.

So if anyone has any information that can aid us while we prayfully consider relocating, I would appreciate it greatly.

Lee Ann,

We just moved from Iowa (70 mi. SW of Des Moines) in Dec. and I miss it so....
Here is what I know that may help you, and please feel free to email me if you would like to ask more.
Columbus Academy is a Catholic Homeschool group in DSM. In fact, I just received a flier for their conference in April. It is a good conference, too. 2 years ago, I met Rita Munn there. Unfortunately, I threw the flyer away, but google Columbus Academy-Des Moines, and you will find it.

Laws: 3 options, in short form:
--You may homeschool with a supervising teacher who looks over your work periodically.
--Portfolio, where you keep everything, but I don't know who "sees" it.
--Yearly testing, and the area education agencies administer the tests (they are free). AEA's are great resources, too. Our kids had some speech therapy with them, hearing tests, etc.

I wish you the best as you discern what is right for your family. I know a lot of folks who wuld say DSM is still "in the sticks" but we liked going there to Dr. and shop. Our little town was about 8000 people, so DSM was "big city" to us! Now we are in the "big city" all the time, and I miss the laid back Iowa way of life-but not the cold. My friend said the high for Monday was going to be 4*. Nope, don't miss that at all!

Thank you very much for the information.

I did find the link for the Columbus Academy and have emailed the contact person for more information.
