Does anyone have a natural chemical free way to cover grey hair - I have sprouted a few in the last couple of years - problem is that they are right in the front and obvious. I do not want to use chemicals (seeing I do not clean with them or eat with them!) I was hoping to find some kind of henna based semi-permanent wash out thing. Is this vanity?!

Oh Marilyn --
I wish I had suggestions -- and there may be something out there, I just never found it. I am queen of premature gray hairs (it's that Irish thing), but I never found any natural dyes. So I had to resort to chemicals -- which I stopped using once I got pregnant. My natural hair color is so dark and now my gray hairs are really white (I'll look great as a senior citizen with shocking white hair!!) -- so all that chemical time on my head seemed too big a risk to make when pregnant. So...I've stopped dyeing. But now that I'm almost 36, I don't mind it as much as I did when I was 22!!
And vain? Maybe? But in an image-based society, I do think some "vanity" things are important to helping our apostolic message get across! I know when I taught, my students listened to the message of a 20-something a lot more WITHOUT gray hairs than they would have if I had gray hairs.
Hope someone else can suggest something for you!

Hi Maryan - in the last half hour I have got some possible solutions.
1) Light Mountain hair colors - totally natural, henna based, recommended by Safe Shoppers Bible readers. I believe that they do a permanent and semi-permanent. The owner of a local health store called and I am going to go check it out this weekend.
2) Naturtint - made in Europe does all natural henna based colorings - I have seen them at Wholefoods, Healthways and other natural stores. But the stores only carry the permanent - and have not been able to order the semi- permanent.
The prices seem reasonable too.
I have long black/chestnut hair and you can notice the grey. I do not have time for a lot of messing about - but hopefully the Light Mountain will be suitable and easy to use.

Marilyn,
I use a all natural, pure Henna colour - I buy it from a health shop that has the different shades in bottles, you can buy and mix what you want. I buy Alburn (1/4) and Dark Brown (3/4) - it is nothing but the henna. I believe the henna really norishes the hair too, like an intense conditioner that is totally natural.
I really like the results and had never been one for dyeing my hair ever before the grey hairs set in.
I think it is fine to colour your hair - it is a consideration for the husband, in keeping yourself attractive and youthful - there is nothing wrong if you don't do it either, though.
We live in an age where premature greying is becoming more common, I am trying to disguise what is not really normal, there will come a time when the grey will be fine....I think - I just think that mid 30's is too young to have grey hair starting up, mainly around the forehead (I also have my father's left hand side 'worry patch' developing ) and the henna is in line with my health considerations.

I was just wondering about this for myself! I'm only 28 1/2, but my hair is about as dark as brown gets, so the whites that have been showing up more and more are very noticeable. I'm so glad to hear there are natural solutions because otherwise by 35 I'm probably going to look like Alexandra from the old "Josie and the Pussycats" cartoon. I shy away from "vanity" too but I already have some noticeable lines on my face (apparently I have raised my eyebrows a whole lot) and this aging thing is happening too fast. With reddish/auburn highlights already here and there in some lighting/times of year, while I'm not sure if henna only comes in that color, it probably won't be too weird-looking on me if it does. From my experience with typical storebought dyes years ago, if it doesn't involve bleaching the hair first, it won't show up on anything but the few hairs that are already a lighter color than the dye.

Theresa,
Henna comes in a great range of colours! You can mix to make your own - I have adjusted my 'receipe' over the last year to create what suits me best.

Just like Me! Let me know how it works! And Annie good to know your "recipe" since that seems close to my color too!
Although I may stay gray for awhile until I get more time to figure this out - since dh says he hardly notices my grays (I don't know how!).

Annie, do you know if you can use Henna on hair that has been previously treated with chemical dye?

Rececca, I didn't think so - I found this quote:
"DON'T mix herbal colours with chemical hair colours as discolouration may result. If you think you may still have traces of a chemical dye in your hair, always test a strand first."
If you have short hair this may not take long to grow out and then change over but long hair may pose a problem.

Thanks Annie for all the info. I feel the same. My hair has thinned a lot due to adrenal fatigue - but I am so trying to keep it long.

Theresa - I am going to try it out - I will let you know. The store I have found is in Worldgate - hope to make it there this weekend.
