Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello,
My family will be attending the March for Life for the first time this year. I know some of you ladies are veteran marchers. I was hoping you could give my info about hotels, where the march starts, parking etc. WE are hoping to go to the Mass at the Basilica the day before- have any of you attended this - with small children? Also, do you make your own signs, or can you get them there? Sorry for so many questions - I am trying to make this whole thing as smooth as possible. I appreciate any info you can provide.

Thanks so much,
Denise in VA

Denise,

Here's the address for the March for Life 2007 website: www.marchforlife.org/event/index.cfm

The March used to start at the Ellipse but it has recently moved to the Mall -- the website details how to get there.

Advice for kids: I think the hardest part with kids is waiting at the Mall for the March to start. They get cold and restless, so bring snacks, warms socks, etc. Although it has been mild weather some years. I don't remember if they provide signs - I always made my own, but there are restrictions on where you can take signs (with sticks), so with kids, I left signs behind because I couldn't work them both! Strollers, back packs, baby bjorns are a help to keep small children with you because IT IS CROWDED!!

Travel advice: How are you planning to travel around DC? By foot, taxi, car or metro? We've driven in and we've done the Metro. My husband is a kind of gutsy and spur of the moment kind of guy, so when we just drive in - we just look around March route for a parking spot and bring quarters. However, he's familiar enough with DC from our various trips and has a vague idea of where he needs to go, so I would only recommend it for people familiar with D.C. or very good at maps.

If you're planning, Metro -- I would check out their website and map out all your activities and see if it works via Metro. I don't know that link off the top of my head, but could do a search for it if you need it.

I believe the nearest Metro to the Shrine is at Catholic University. There is also a Metro stop near the Mall -- I think it's the Smithsonian. But these are just my rough memory guesses - the website gives you all the details etc.

Just a couple of words about Metro: other than taking a bus provided by your parish, I think this is the easiest thing to do if you don't know DC well. And if you get lost or confused, there's tons of maps and people to help you navigate the metro. But it is crowded. We have four boys ages five and under. My husband and I did it with a double stroller, a backpack, and a baby bjorn, so that everyone was contained. The Metro has elevators (or sometimes we carried each end of the stroller on the escalators), but again keep in mind that at events like these -- it is crowded (have I said that before ). So staying together and moving quickly to get on and off the Metro is important.

I don't have any hotel, Basilica the night before, or Rose Convention experience. We just go in for the day.

Hope the other information helps...

Thanks Maryan -

I may just take your advice about the signs - I have a feeling I'd wind up carrying them all by the end anyway!

Thanks for all your other tips too.

Maryan,

May I quote or forward your advice to a friend of mine who wants to go to the March for the first time?

In Christ,
Deborah
