On New Year's Eve (or tomorrow ) we'll be grilling Elk steaks and shrimp kabobs. We'll be watching football (Broncos of course), then later the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, looking at old photos and trying not to nod off too much while the dc stay up until midnight
What's a good marinade for elk?
What's on your menu? What about Monday?

Traditional in our family is WATT day. I'll have more about it on my blog, but it is a FEAST!
I'll have to think about the Elk marinade -- I don't think we've ever used one!

New Year's Day is always pork chops and black-eyed peas, for luck.

We've been discussing what to do on New Year's Eve all day long. My dh and I aren't the partying-type at all. My BIL use to host a huge bonfire/party at his house. Last year Hurricane Rita gave him a good excuse to stop the tradition.
We're at a lose.
New Year's Day my brother is barbecuing at his house: chicken, steak, sausage, porkchops
Mom is supplying the black-eyed peas for good luck and cooked cabbage for money. Also making the potato salad. I'm supplying the baked beans & ground meat.

New Year's Eve is at our home this year, we have all our kids and a few family friends and all THEIR kids and well it's pretty loud. We'll do appetizers and snacks, some punch and soda. Eventually, tea and coffee
We play games and try to stay awake until midnight.
New Year' Day is at my moms and it's a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition (not that we are PA Dutch, but we've lived here all our lives) to have pork, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes for dinner.
Blessings,
Kelly

New Year's Eve we will have meatloaf, baked potatoes, steamed carrots and peas.
New Year's Day there will be roast loin of pork, mashed potatoes, turnips, steamed broccoli, applesauce, sparkling apple cider and our traditional tower of cupcakes to honor Our Lady on her feast. This year, instead of the blue, I am planning on baking pure white cupcakes in honor of Our Blessed Mother's Purity, garnishing each one with a little rose made out of red and green spice drops to represent the Flower of Jesse. Together, they will become "Mary, Mother of God Cupcakes." [Please click here and scroll down to see how the spice drop flowers are formed.]
By the way, no one asked "What's for Breakfast?" but this is a photo of part of our yearly New Year's Day breakfast, created by my husband to make the children laugh. He made it for the first time in 2000, and it has become a much anticipated tradition: 2006.

New Year's Eve is a buffet, set out so that the children can eat as they choose throughout the evening. I serve mostly appetizers and some snack foods - chicken wings, vegetables and dip, chips and salsa. Since it's also our anniversary, I always include a few 'nicer' foods - crab dip, baked brie and French bread, maybe steamed shrimp. We learned many years ago not to attempt dinner out on the actual day of our anniversary, as restaurants menus are outrageous!
For New Year's Day, since it's dh's birthday, we always have a nice meal, and beef is what's for dinner! I was hoping to try Elizabeth's/Macbeth's tenderloin recipe, but couldn't find a reasonable sized piece, so dh is going with his traditional b-day dinner: steak teriyaki and shrimp with tarragon butter, caesar salad, roasted potatoes. Dessert varies, but may be Texas Sheet cake or cheesecake.
God bless,
Tami

I don't know what we are having (going to a friend's house), but elk sounds good! If you find a good marinade, Gwen, let us know the recipe!

We will be having heavy appetizers on New Year's Eve--enough to snack on throughout the evening.
On New Year's Day, I will make Smoky Black Bean Chili and assorted snacks. It will be a relaxing day, and I think that the boys will watch football on television.
I like Alice's tower of cupcakes. Perhaps I will try that with my dd.
Believe it or not, we are having snow again! Large, wet flakes. Not sure how long they will last. But the dc will love it!

We just had our evening meal -- chocolate fondue with fruits... , chips and quacomole. We are going to watch Polar Express DVD in a few minutes. (I do hope it is good) We will then set off our own fireworks and probably go to bed early, because we are all a bit sick and need to take care!
Tomorrow after Mass we will watch the New Years' Concert from Vienna. It is a family tradition Then for lunch (which is the main meal in most german families) we will have fried chicken schnitzel with french fries and a vegetable medley...ice cream for dessert.
I forgot to mention Breakfast. We are having Bagels! I know , for most of you that is no big deal, but here it is a big deal! I ordered my bagels from Salomon Bagels in Berlin. That is the only way for me to purchase them.
I wish you all a Guten Rutsch! and a Happy New Year!

Tonight the plan is for Wild Mushroom Soup and more Cuban Rolls (we are so addicted to them!) as we watch Fiddler on the Roof - a Tradition! dating back to my childhood.
As far as Elk recipes go, I remember Mom soaking it in buttermilk prior and using sage on the steaks themselves. She said you had to embrace, not fight , all that sage brush the elk had been raised on!

Tonight it's lasagne made in the Northern Italian tradition, with Bolognese and bechemel sauce. The kids will also make their own pizzas.
Tomorrow it's a buffet of all kinds of appetizers, and nachos to eat while watching the Rose Bowl.

MacBeth,
Something tells me you're gonna like these:
Bourbon Elk
Beer Sauce
and....
Dickel Pickle Marinade - makes about 3 cups, try this marinade on any wild game (found this on some guy's blog, so I won't link it).
1 cup George Dickel bourbon (never heard of it, I used Jack Daniels)
1/2 cup wine vinegar
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon dry mustard
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Don't know which I'll use yet, all depends on if there's a beer in the fridge, but it'll probably be this last one. I've gotta go get it soaking!

It's pizza tonight!
That and fireworks in the backyard and driveway. Just us. We're in the country so there are fireworks already going off all around us.
I think we're all watching a movie too but I'm not sure what we'll all agree on watching.

Hey Cay, Up North we had pizza tonight too...along with beef jerky and various Christmas Candies (they were on clearance!)..we're watching Chronicles of Narnia, with a copy from the library that has extra features, which we haven't seen yet! We having a very subdued and peaceful New Year...our only daughter and granddaughter just moved hundreds of miles away, just yesterday morning, so things are rather quiet, and more than a little sad here without our dear girls! Nonetheless we're celebrating all that the Lord has in store for 2007! May all of your families be incredibly blessed in the coming year!

Speaking of Christmas Candies...
My oldest son came home this evening and gave his sisters two boxes of cordial cherries apiece !!!
Sweet? Yes, it was.
Sickeningly so. That's six boxes total. We had chocolate-covered cordial cherries and two very hyper little girls all over the living room earlier.
