Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum...my subject is to find the right gift, and it fits in Picture books and Catholic Mosaic.

I have a nephew age 5 and niece age 2. The nephew is my husband's godson, but they are nominal Catholics. And almost of the books they read are twaddle. They have lots of STUFF, and so a book is what the dad wants for them, too.

I have lots of ideas to give for gifts, but out of all the wonderful picture books including books with a religious/moral lesson, what would you choose? It can be Christmas theme or not.

I was thinking one Jan Brett title, either The Mitten or The Gingerbread Baby.

A Tomie de Paola book...but which one?

I'd love to hear any other suggestions. What do you give as gift books?

I don't have anyone those ages to give books to that don't have them!!

I will say that my ds4 LOVES The Mitten, and *reads* it to his 2yo cousin. She will sit there with him and neither one moves.

The other book my ds4 fell in love with is A Small Miracle by Peter Collington. No words, just pictures, but he looks at it over and over and keeps inventing new stories to tell about the pictures.

I know, isn't it great that I can pick almost anything good and I'm almost positive they don't have it. Virgin territory, really!

Our budget is about $20 per child, so I think I could probably swing 2 books per child if I go by way of Amazon.

I like Clown of God since it has a religious message but is not as overt as his specifically Catholic books. If you just pick one Tomie, will they discover the others at the library?

I'd give the Big Green Pocketbook, or Jamberry of Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear to the 2 year old.

I'd give Make Way for Ducklings or The Crippled Lamb to the 5 year old.

We all LOVED the Sam books by Barbro Lingren. They are great for beginning reading and funny!
