Obviously, by posting this I'm desperate.
You ladies are some of the most informed mommas I know of.
I need your opinion on the affects of zoloft on baby while breastfeeding. I read online it's only found in traces. What does that mean? How would that affect a baby while breastfeeding & in the long run?
Right now, my family is suffering because of what I'm going through.
(I've come back & edited out all the details. I guess I needed to "talk". )

When I was facing a similar question while breastfeeding my daughter I was able to call a local lactation consultant through a children's hospital and get information directly from Hale's "Medications and Mother's Milk". I understand that volume is the premier source of information about the effects of different medications on breastfeeding.
Hope this helps.

Michaela,
I'm so sorry you're going through. I echo Patty's advice. My ob constantly was asking probing questions to make sure I wasn't going through postpartum...so it might come up naturally.
Do you have a lightbox? I was ready to try that and other natural sources before the anti-depressant, as I wanted to nurse badly. Diet -- stay away from the sugars and simple carbs and caffeine. Those aggravate it all. If you can, exercise. Endorphins really help. Open up all your curtains and let in the light, even if it is grey. Get your Vit D naturally as much as possible.
I've taken anti-depressants in the past (not postpartum though), and know when to call "uncle" to get extra help. It's hard to do it. But when life is tumbling about and you can't handle even getting out of bed and dressing yourself...let alone take care of the kids and be a good mommy....well...
Big hugs and prayers, Michaela.

Michaela,
Have you called an La Leche League Leader? They should have the most recent edition of Medication's and Mother's Milk, by Thomas Hale, PHD (I have the 2004 edition). They can read the information to you so you can make the best decision for you and your baby. lalecheleague.org

Michaela,
I only have a minute...maybe I can post more later.
I have suffered from both depression in general and post-partum depression. I took medication in college, before I was married. Prozac was not a good fit for me and Zoloft made me feel manic.
When I suffered from PPD after the birth of my 3rd baby, I received injections of natural progesterone form my doctor. It helped my symptoms IMMENSELY. I noticed relief within a day. I also talked to a counselor a couple of times a month for about 6 months. Also, very helpful. I don't think you can take the natural progesterone injections during pregnancy, but they're okay postpartum and while breastfeeding. The Pope Paul VI Institute should have more information on this treatment that you can share w/ your doctor.
PM or post on this thread if you need more info from me. I know what a heavy cross depression can be. I'll pray that you find some relief soon.
Dawn

you can also read info from Dr. Hale's website
http://neonatal.ttuhsc.edu/lact/
also I found after my 3rd child that I had a much greater need for vitamin supplements than previously.. there are a number of vitamins that if you're deficient have as symptoms depression or symptoms of depression.
Rainbow Light prenatal vitamins (6 a day), or NF Formulas Prenatal Forte (also 6 a day) are what I've found to truly make the difference in how I feel.

I'm no expert, but I have been taking Zoloft for the past 2 years due to anxiety. I started taking it when my second son was 3 months old. I then proceeded to breastfeed him for another year. I know that I am biased, but at 2 this child knows all of his letters/phonics and can spell some words. I really haven't seen any ill effects on this child. I also took Zoloft during this entire pregnancy, and while I have been breastfeeding for the past week.
I talked to my pediatrician about this very thing the last go around, and they said that the excretion was minimal and they were not worried about it at all.
Hope this helps. I'll be praying for you.

I've found that daily flax oil helps me -- sort of along the same lines as the cod liver oil. It's the Omega 3 fatty acids that help lift depression. I can really tell when I skip my supplements for a few days. B vitamins have helped me, too.
Also, it *does* help to talk about it -- or write about it. During my bouts with depression I have found one of the most helpful things to be a notebook in which I could write anything without censoring myself. It's not a quick fix, but it has helped me to identify how I really feel about certain problems, and propelled me toward ways to fix them.

Michaela,
I took Zoloft for nine months after the birth of my second child. My doctor and I consulted Hale's Medications and Mother's Milk before making the decision. Zoloft is one of the safest ssri's to take. Here is the link to Dr. Hale's breastfeeding pharmacology forum, concerning Zoloft.
Some studies have shown that it is best to take Zoloft for a minimum of nine months--recurrence of PPD is shown to be less after a nine-month regimen.
I have not had a recurrence of PPD with subsequent pregnancies, but I do supplement with fish oil, and I think that has helped a great deal.
Bless you, this is a miserable thing to be going through.

Forgive me for taking so long to respond. I signed on earlier & answered PMs about this, bought the suggested book Medication's and Mother's Milk, and then had to get ready for my OB appt. Now I plan to take some time and read the suggested links.
Thank you for sharing what you know.
One thing I do know is I need some help. At this moment, I'm just not sure how I plan to go about it.
I think the lightbox may be a perfect Christmas present. I am affected by the sun or lack of it, but I know it's more then that. I could even try the over items mentioned (more supplements, cod liver oil, ect).
I didn't get a chance to talk to my OB about this because he was so concerned that my c-section hasn't been scheduled yet....and there is no open appts for the c-section or even any more visits before baby come. (All my future appts have been canceled by the hospital because of Christmas vacations....wrong time of year to have a baby)
Funny thing is....it is not bothering me.
Baby is coming no matter what. I get down or stressed about a lot of things, but this is one that I can't control.
Off to read the links.
