I have considered starting a blog as a way for family and friends to keep up with what's going on in our family. It might also be a way for us to write about this road to Rome we are on with the hope that we could clear up some commonly held misconceptions about Catholocism which Protestants often hold to. It could serve as a venue for answering touch questions that I'm sure we will get.
My husband isn't sold on the idea of a blog because he's concerned about safety. He's afraid that the information women give out on blogs - real name, kids real names, hometown - might cause someone to start stalking us or even worse. How do you girls with blogs deal with this potential danger?
Also, are there certain blog sites that offer more security features to prevent this type of abuse?

You can have a password protected blog and only give the info to people you trust. My blog is public, but I only use my children's first initial. Many moms use aliases for their children. I had a lot of pictures of my children on my blog, but I removed them after finding my dear children on MSN Image Search. It really bothered me. From now on I will only post pictures that show them working or at an angle, but no longer from the front.
I have no info on my blog about my hometown, you don't even need to put your state, though I do.
HTH and let us know if you launch a blog! (And prayers for you as you consider swimming down the Tiber!)

I am with homeschool journal and in query to my question regards this topic recently I was told I could do a few things, I can have a public blog, then I could post some posts on that blog that are private posts or as Katherine suggested you could have a password protected blog.
I have been contemplating using the private post options for posts for myself about our hs day, ie. I had a bad day child 1 did such and such, child 2 is never going to read
I am careful to never indicate where we live and haven't used pics of the dc nor their real names, only mine is real. My dh has reservations too although his is more that I restirct my computer time, which is a very fair request.

I've been playing around with beta blogger and you can make a blog with them completely private (you can only read it when you're signed in) or viewable only to invited members. We're going to be starting up a family one that will be for sharing photos with family and friends only using this feature.

The info is out there, it is simply a result of our modern age. I sat down with a friend recently who had never posted a thing online and we started googling names and we found her entire family's real names with her husband's signature scanned into the internet. It was from a funeral they had attended in NYC and the guest book had been placed online.
My littlest sisters had photos and full real names online at age 8 and 6. They won a 4-H award and had their picture in the paper. That tiny town paper posted it online.
Another friend had her baby picture in the paper, it was also posted online so her kid has been in the internet's system since she was a few hours old, real name, real photo.
To me it there is nothing you can do about it, it is the state of modern society. I don't worry about it at all. So it is strictly a comfort level thing, not a security thing, in my mind.

I use aliases for my children more for their privacy as they grow up, in case anything I write ever embarrasses them. We live in a tiny town, so I don't post our location, but I'm sure it could be found if someone really wanted to. I worry more about the cars that drive by on the sometimes busy road outside, though, than I do about somebody finding my blog on the internet. *Everybody* in a ten mile radius seems to know who we are and where we live, and I haven't met 99% of them.
I would take whatever precautions you feel comfortable with, if it helps your peace of mind, but I do think it's reasonably safe to blog. I am planning to start a private blog on typepad that's just for our family, though, where I will post many more pictures of the kids for the benefit of relatives far away.

I don't post my address, but it's obvious what city I live near. I use the kids real names because there are 8 of them and the real names are difficult enough for most people to keep straight.
As another posted, internet privacy is a myth of grand proportions to begin with, imho and experience.

This must be an American thing. I just googled my name and found only two references. One listing me as a member of our local library board and one from when I used to use my real name online. My husband's name is easier to find but that's mostly due to his work as a teacher.
So, I will stick to my pseudonym and use the private blogs for info I want to keep out of the public eye (family blogs, etc.). It can be done!
