Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Every year our dear hs neighbors delivered baklava to us as a Christmas gift, what a treat! This year however, we have moved quite some distance from them and there's no chance of getting the recipe as their house burned down...so I was hoping someone here has a simple, tried and true recipe for baklava.

It just wouldn't seem like Christmas without baklava!
Thanks for any help.

I'm on my way out, Maddie, but if I come back and no one has answered you yet I'll post my recipe.

Here is my tried and true Baklava recipe.

4 cups (1-16 oz pkg) walnuts,finely chopped
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 pound phyllo sheets
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, melted
1-12 oz jar honey

In a large bowl, mix walnuts, sugar & cinnamon until blended.

Grease 9x13 baking dish. Cut the phyllo into 9x13 rectangles.

Place 1 sheet phyllo in baking dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat 5 times so you will have 6 sheets of phyllo. Sprinkle with 1 cup of the walnut mixture.

Now repeat the above paragraph 3 times.

Place the remaining phyllo on top of the last walnut layer and brush with remaining butter. Using a SHARP knife, cut just halfway through all the layers -- I make a triangle pattern.

Bake approximately 1 1/2 hours at 300 degrees -- or until top is golden brown.

Heat honey over medium heat until hot - not boiling. Spoon the hot honey over the Baklava after it is removed from the oven. Cool on a wire rack at least 1 hour so no one gets burned eating it!

You can cover and leave it at room temperature after that.

ENJOY!!!!!!

Thank you, Paula (and Stef for offering ).

Are phyllo sheets easy to find? I've never used / heard of them before. I remember my friend used Zwieback, is this the same thing? I hate to appear so clueless...I guess I could Google but it's so impersonal. I love to have the tried and true recipes and advice.

Thank you!

Hi Maddie, sorry, got back late yesterday evening and didn't have time to post earlier. You can find the recipe here:

Maddie:

I buy phyllo sheets at my local grocery store. They are usually in the freezer section in a long rectangular box.

They are EXTREMELY thin -- so when you use them you unroll the whole box of sheets and keep them covered with a damp towel -- that way you can use one at a time.

Paula

p.s. after posting this last night for you, guess what I made....they are REALLY good for breakfast with a cup of coffee.....

You have both been so helpful, thank you! I'm off this morning to buy phyllo and we will attempt to make our first batch of baklava next week.

God bless.
