I have to buy some presents for a couple of my nieces that are 15 or 16 and I don't know what to get! They don't live close to us so we don't know them well. Gift cards are a possibility but they seem so impersonal... Any ideas?

I bought a spangley purse for my 10 yo at Target for Christmas. She asked for it after seeing one owned by the teenage girl who is student-directing our homeschool play. They were located in the girls clothing section, along the wall with all the trendy girls' stuff.

When I was a teenager I would have appreciated a Starbucks gift card or even just cash that I could have used to pay for a night out at the movies or something. I didn't like being given clothing or accessories because I have very particular taste. I was forever being given frilly heart and flower stuff that I knew I'd never wear.

I think gift certificates are actually nice for teens because they honor their growing independence.
