Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Katherine,

I got this code from my husband who is a web designer. Here is what he sent me. It works as long as you don't have a new window open for the picture.

This should probably work... Try it out
Just put this code somewhere within your typepad template...

<script language=JavaScript>
var message="";
////////////////
function clickIE() {if (document.all) {(message);return false;}}
function clickNS(e) {if (document.layers||(document.getElementById&&!document.all)) {
if (e.which==2||e.which==3) {(message);return false;}}}
if (document.layers)
{document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);document.onmousedow n=clickNS;}
else{document.onmouseup=clickNS;document.oncontextmenu=click IE;}
document.oncontextmenu=new Function("return false")
// -->
</script>

Ruth, this is wonderful! Tell you husband thank you.

When you say copy it into your template, do you mean to make a Typelist (notes) and entered it there? What exactly did you do?

Thanks again and thanks to all of you for your responses.

Yep, that what I did. Typelist, notes, copy HTML link on it. Make sure your photos don't open in a new window. Ohterwise they can copy the picture when they click on it. My husband has another code which would be better than this one, but he won't be home until after 8 tonight.

God bless. Ruth

Aren't these guys great? The only thing is, he doesn't like to fix our computers when they go bad. He wants nothing to do with them at home.

ACCCKKK! Really?   My dh just LOVES to solve problems on our computer at home, oftentimes, problems that I didn't even know existed, or, I wouldn't consider a problem!

I ask my husband what his title is and he just laughs. He started out doing one thing and now is doing something completely different.

Here is another code to disable the "right click" option.

Paste this code between the area <Head> and </Head>
Do not paste it in the body! It won't work.

Here is the one to prevent people from
right-clicking to copy images.
Note: The pop-up message custom area is in BOLD.
Insert your own name & other info in the BOLD area of the code!

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript1.1">
<!-- Original: Martin Webb (martin@irt.org) -->

<!-- This script and many more are available free online at -->
<!-- The JavaScript Source!! http://javascript.internet.com -->

<!-- Begin
function right(e) {
if (navigator.appName == 'Netscape' &&
(e.which == 3 || e.which == 2))
return false;
else if (navigator.appName == 'Microsoft Internet Explorer' &&
(event.button == 2 || event.button == 3)) {
alert("I'm sorry, The Right click option on your mouse has been disabled for the download window pages.");
return false;
}
return true;
}

document.onmousedown=right;
document.onmouseup=right;
if (document.layers) window.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);
if (document.layers) window.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEUP);
window.onmousedown=right;
window.onmouseup=right;
// End -->
</script>

I hope this helps.

Hi all. Krisann and everyone, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, because I'm sure people are really grateful that you've shared this code. But I did want to mention that there's another side to disabling right click on your sites.

Disabling right clicks may deter some people from copying your stuff, but it also annoys others. Especially legitimate readers who let's say would like to print a copy of a craft that you wrote about so they have the instructions in front of them when they make the craft, or something inspirational that you wrote to keep in their personal reading file. So sometimes it's your best option, but do consider the effects on your "good readers".

The other thing is that right-click will not deter someone who really wants to copy your material. All they have to do is Ctrl-S or File-Save and they've got a copy of your whole page. If they've got a different browser, like Firefox, for instance, for which plugins are available where you just click a button and it copies everything, even your style sheets, etc., it's not much of a deterrent. From there it's just a matter of cut or copy and paste so if someone has the know-how, disabling right-click won't stop them -- I just thought I'd mention this so you're not surprised if you still see copies of your work elsewhere. It IS a great deterrent, just not 100% effective.

Katherine, if you're reading this, the watermark your hubby suggested for your photos is also a great idea, or at least a small signature on a corner of the photo. Some cameras also automatically add a digital signature so the information is stored in the photo itself. Then again, it's not 100% effective either, and does take time to do.

The last option which some people have resorted to, but can also be very annoying to readers, is to use passwords on your posts -- I don't know if other CMS software will allow this, but Wordpress does. So I have certain posts that I password-protect and only my kids or hubby know the code, plus a few chosen friends. Especially useful for really personal stuff.

Guess it's all a balance of how much you're comfortable with revealing on the 'net and how much of a risk you're willing to take.

Stef, I didn't really think of it that way and now that I've been mulling it over, I think I'll skip copy protecting it. I didn't realize that the right click disabling kept people from copying text and not just pictures. So when I posted my St. Nicholas unit, for instance, no one could have printed it out if it was disabled. What's the point of posting it if I'm not sharing it for the benefit of others? Then I thought of all the other blogs that help me so much. Like Elizabeth's units and just this morning I printed out Karen E's post on St. Lucy's bread.

I think I'm going to just realize that sometimes less than honest people will take advantage of it, but those people are few and far between. Plus, I did hear from others as well that there are very easy ways around the right click disabling. If someone wants it and it's visible, they can get it.

Thanks, Stef, for you input and thanks Ruth for trying to help.

Hi Stef,

You made a great point. I agree with you and Katherine and I also removed my HTML code. My husband also deals with computer security and he agrees that there is always a way around it. Thanks for all your imput. I have learned a lot from everyone's blogs. Have a blessed feast of St. Juan Diego.

I've become a little paranoid now and tonight I saw in my referer stats that someone found my blog from MSN Image Search. They had done a search for Crown Cake (probably a wholesome person), but the image that led them to my blog was a picture of my children with their Christ the King cake. I also found a picture on MSN of my 8 year old. I don't like it. I took all the pictures of my kids off my blog and from now on will only post pics of them that are from the side or back view and not full face. It really creeped me out to see my kids faces on an image search and their photos available for public use. It's one thing to copy a craft picture, but not my kids.

Katherine

Thank you for sharing all this it has been so timely for me, I was jsut debating whether I was being too silly by using dc's middle names and not having their photos when this all popped up regarding your blog. I think I'll go with my instincts and stick too no photos at this stage. It is a shame though as i know I've appreciated seeing photos of all of you and your dc on everyone's blogs (including your dc Katherine) as it has connected you all and seemed more personal. I still think phots without the dc can work Katherine, take your crown cake shich I loved. A close up of it without the dc is still informative, just not the same.

Thanks, Erin.
It kind of makes me sad to trim down my blog photos. It really is unfortunate for my husband's parents. They are the reason I started to blog in the first place. They don't live near us and my dh's father has been a shut-in since major surgery this summer. He loves to visit the blog many times a day and check up on the kids. I think I'll created a password protected blog for family and keep my public blog going the way it is and just post Alice-style pictures (a picture taken from behind while the kids are working or something like that). I feel ok putting little baby face pictures up, but not the older kiddos.

But no, it's not the same. I agree.

That's pretty scary. I like the idea of taking pictures of the kids without showing their faces. Thanks for all of your advice.
