Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hoping to hear what you all have to say about "Santa Claus". Last year we went through a grand deliberation over whether or not to introduce Santa Claus at Christmas time. We decided to go ahead with Santa (I prefer to call him St. Nick). Once again, I find myself rethinking this topic. Our oldest is three-and-a-half and this is our last chance to change things, if we're going to.

My main concern is that I don't want to lose credibility with our children when it comes to things unseen, ultimately things of faith. If they find out one day that "Santa Claus isn't real", will they ever wonder if other things we've expressed belief in, such as God and the angels, are not real? I try to be exacting in honesty and integrity of word and action, especially when it comes to the children. The reality is, I'm finding it a hard to "lie" to them on this one and yet it seems near impossible NOT to include Santa in Christmas time traditions!

I would love to hear different Catholic perspectives on this topic as well as specifics on what you do at your house to help children understand the "spirit" behind the man!

Kristin:

Check out this thread from last year. It gives both sides of the argument. We don't do a whole lot to promote the secular santa. We focus on Jesus' birth. We personally let them believe until they question us and then we tell them the truth. No one seems harmed by it yet. Only our two oldest (10 and 12) know who Santa is. Saint Nicholas was a real person, is patron saint to children. The way we presented it makes in nonthreatening (oooh! a scary man is lurking in our house!). I think the mystery is fun for as long as it lasts.

Just my $0.02,
