Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

when they ask you for something and you are in the middle of doing something else?

I find myself in this situation CONSTANTLY and, "Sure. Please wait a moment," is getting old VERY quickly!

I keep thinking I want to come up with a cute and perhaps rhymey :o) response that will help to alleviate any undertones of a bsy mother's frustration or exasperation!

I would love to hear how to best manage these moments from the PROS!

Well, you may not want to hear this, and I am certainly not saying it is something I practice as much as I should but...
a very holy friend of mine once said that when her children need something and she is tempted to put them off so she can finish what she is doing she instead responds, to herself, "Yes, Jesus" and goes to that child as if it were Jesus Himself calling.

Sorry it doesn't rhyme.

As soon as I am finished here
I'll be glad to help you, my dear

There are certainly times when we can't 'stop in the middle', like during a diaper change or when we actually find time ourselves to use the restroom.

I'm sure you can come up with lots of cute, rhymey things to say. You are such a thoughtful mother to strive for a cheerful, gentle response and littles are so easily cheered by something as simple as a rhyme!

How about:

I'm in the middle of something, hon,
Would you please ask again, when I am done?

Puts the burden of remembering on them.

The first response is helpful in that I do need to be better about stopping what I'm doing when the "montastic bell" rings! The two rhymes are just what I was looking for! Thanks so much!!!

Rachel -

I used your response this evening and it worked like a charm! At first I hestiated, trying to remember the verse. When I came out with it my three-year-old chuckled and got a big smile on his face! He was immediately content and didn't seem to even remember what it was he originally asked for!

I've heard that sometimes it helps in parenting situations to do something "off the wall" and different than what you usually do. It definitely worked this time!

And I think part of it was the delivery ... I said it with a smile and a twinkle in my eyes! :o)

Ha! I'm so glad it worked! I'm going to try it too.

(I have to admit I like Mrs. K's "my dear"; in our house Bill is "hon" mostly. Of course saying "Yes, I'm coming" without sounding exasperated isn't such a bad idea for me either. )

I told my husband the story about how I asked this question on the forum and the three GREAT responses I received. Then I shared with him what happened when I used the response with our son.

Later in the evening, I asked my husband if he would please get me another ream of paper from downstairs (in a box on high shelf). From the other room I could hear him say, "In a minute, Hon ... when I'm done!"

We both smiled and I realized it is actually a great thing for my husband and I to use with each other, as well!
