Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dear grandma is in a nursing home this Christmas. I want to send her something special that she can use for Christmas and am looking for ideas. I will need to send it as she lives in another state.
My ideas are pictures of the kids(small and in frames), candy, maybe some home baked cookies, a magazine, book on tape(ideas for what a 95 year old woman might like to listen too?) Any other ideas out there?

We are regulars at the local nursing home and I spent sometime working in one a few years back. One item that is really appreciated is individual size snack food, especially the sweets! Crossword puzzles/word find type books are a hit but the one magazine that is discussed and shared more than any is Reminisce. If your not familiar with it, get yourself a subscription, my children read it cover to cover and are full of wonderful stories of "back when". It's like having an extra set of grandparents around.
Pictures and letters are always SO welcome.

One thing that I gave my grandmother when she was in a nursing home was a large, wooden children's rosary. The large beads made it much easier for her to handle (she was there after suffering from a stroke, so had lost some abilities.)

She also loved hanging suncatchers and rainbow prisms in her window.

Sweets :) Wrapped candies, homemade cookies, prepackaged goodies were all welcome and enjoyed!

Warm slippers and cozy sweaters. (depending on her needs - she may have all she needs clothing-wise?)

One year we sent her a small potted tree with wrapped candies tied on as ornaments, and a single strand of lights.

And, lots of pictures of family.

Include some personal messages from each of the children or something they make for her - with above suggestions and she will be so proud. Maybe even a tape or video tape of the children singing Christmas songs for her and personal messages. When my grandmother was in a nursing home, having grandchildren that cared was like a status thing - all those special home-made things the kids did were passed around and bragged about from resident to resident. It was a very tangible reminder that they were remembered and revered enough for someone to take some special time.

Our daughter works in a care home. A few things she mentioned are:
~nice soaps, body wash or lotions
~comfortable clothing, such as pajamas, house dresses, or sweat outfits
~family pictures, a memory book or scrapbook
~homemade gifts, especially from grandchildren or great-grandchildren
~Tapes or videos. If she is Catholic she might enjoy a video or DVD of Holy Mass, or a tape or CD of the Rosary.
~most of all, visits or phone calls
Remember, most people in care homes don't get out anymore, for Holy Mass, shopping or going to dinner, so things we might take for granted mean even more to them. Also, they appreciate knowing you care about them and are praying for them. I used to visit several care homes with Legion of Mary, and the people we visited were SO grateful for our company and any kindnesses they received. Your thoughtfulness will be much appreciated by your grandmother!
