Hi all,
I have taken on the task of building an Irish Theme Basket for a Catholic charity auction. The theme was assigned to me and I don't mind but I am no expert on this (my heritage being French Canadian and Italian  ). While I have some ideas, I was hoping to tap the creativity and knowledge of this group for more. I am allowed to spend $120. It could appeal to any and/or all ages. It can have Catholic items or not.
Current possibilities: Darby O'Gill and the Little People movie, Belleek porcelin, Flannery O'Connor book.

What about the "Celtic Woman" CD? Everyone I know loves it. Also, Ireland is famous for tea drinking, so you could put in some high-quality Irish Breakfast tea and maybe a tea strainer (if you can find loose tea...I never saw a teabag in Ireland!). There's always Bailey's Irish Cream or some similar item, if allowed (this is the time of year to find cute gift sets, too). A Guiness mug or T-shirt could work...

A bottle of fine Irish wiskey, a packet of Irish tea, a can of McCann's oatmeal, a black velevet hair band, an Aran hat or scarf, some fiddle music, Riverdance DVD, scone mix, St. Patrick holy card...

If you could find blackcurrant jam, that would go great with the soda bread.

I'd suggest a St. Brigid's Cross.
Also, some of the Catholic shops I visit have some great Irish merchandise. Some of the stuff is just lovely. I bought for my new nephew this beautiful stand-up pewter Celtic crucifix with a small St. Patrick statue combination. If you're interested, I can track down the brand name and such. I bought it in Altoona, PA. I LOVE their Catholic shop -- it's right in the mall!

I want MacBeth's basket.
Celtic Women is a great CD. Also the Irish Tenors are popular. You could add a Conomara marble rosary or pendant. Youcan also usually buy Peat Moss pellets for the fireplace in an Irish store. How about an Aran knit scarf or mittens?

Thanks again for the ideas -- I wouldn't be able to make such a nice basket without my 4real friends :-)
So far I have bough the Celtic Women CD, an Irish Tenors Christmas CD, and my husband's favorite Bing Crosby singing Irish songs. An acquaintance of mine owns a second home in Ireland (!) and she is going to give me some tea towels and cookbook.
Turns out that Darby O'Gill books have been republished by Sophia press so I will be getting one of those and my friend will be making some soda bread. I will definitly still be going to a Catholic shop and probably and Irish shop. I haven't heard word yet about the liquor being allowed, but Baily's Irish sounds so yummy I might have to go get some for our house (and we never have anything like that here!)
So many good ideas -- now I have to find a basket big enough for them all!

Sounds so wonderful. I think you need something for the eyes. The Quiet Man DVD perhaps? A calendar of Irish countryside?

Good idea thinking of the senses, Jenn. I did buy Darby O'Gill and the Little People (with a singing Sean Connery!) but adding the Quiet Man is a definite possibility. Also, I looked in the bag from my friend and there's a desk calendar with beautiful pictures and the cookbook is laid out like a coffee table book.
I hope to get to 1 or 2 Catholic book/gift shops today for more.
Keep the ideas coming - I still have some time...

I wanted you to know that the basket sold for $220 dollars! (I spent around $100 less than that thanks to donations of the linen and a couple of books)
