Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Alright ladies, I've been rereading the posts that talked about keeping homemaking notebooks. I've already started working on mine a little bit, hoping it will help with keeping the house running when the new baby comes. And maybe it will help reduce some of my paper clutter!

I read that some of you were working on notebooks of your own & was curious how they were organized. None of the household notebooks I've seen through blogs were from Catholic women. I would love to see a Catholic notebook! I got some great ideas from the website referred to in this post: Cleaning 101 (I tried to make a link, but no luck.)

Unforturnately, the blog is very anti-Catholic in several of her postings. The last few being just within the last several days.

Care to share what is in your notebook?

So far I've just gathered the supplies, made a cover and binder sections such as...Calendar, Schedules, Cleaning, Meals, Education, Projects & Contact Info.

Thank you for starting this! I've been curious, too...

In my housekeeping notebook, I have a planner - which I find I don't use nearly as much as my big Flylady calendar (but its the Catholic Women's...and so I am trying to get better at opening it every day to at least see the Saints, Rosary reminders, Day of Obligations, etc), meal schedule - behind the meal plan is a few (more and more) printed out recipes, when I think about it, I try to add a cleaning routine or two...

I know Kim has been busy lately, but I'm eagerly awaiting pictures of the beautiful binders Elizabeth said she was making...

This is so funny, as I have been to this same lady's blog the past few days. She has some good ideas, but her attacks on Catholics are disheartening and uncharitable.

I, too, would love to see what other Catholic moms come up with, and I am going to give it a go, myself. If I ever get it finished, I will try to post it-if I can use a scanner? We don't have a digital camera.

Thanks!

God Bless,

This Previous thread concerns that blog and her anti-Catholicism. I won't visit, even for really nice Homekeeping Notebook Ideas!

So we need to share our Catholic Homekeeping Notebooks!

O Night Divine a new venture by Mary Ellen, has a seasonal version Getting Organized.

Elisabeth Grace!

When I clicked on this topic I got a little box that said the thread was started at 2:09 a.m. --

WHAT ON EARTH were you doing on-line at that time of night?

I love the thread, but that little bit of info just blew me away!

Peace,
Nancy

Elisabeth Grace, I have been thinking about this topic for some time now. And especially lately with my dh under the weather and sort of out of commission. It has pointed out to me that there is so much to do around here and that I really need to get a better handle on it. I am hoping my homekeeping binder will be a key to doing just that. It is still in its rough draft, but I am working on it! I hope lots of people share their ideas!

I had a very elaborate Home Notebook for several years and it really did help with new baby, medical records for the medically fragile child etc.

I don't keep it up so much anymore since I can manage things with a monthly calendar and a small notebook with my household routines contained within.

I also have a homemaking blog but I haven't updated it for a long time.   The sidebar has my household routines on it but it needs to be updated.

What a timely discussion! I just picked up my sorely neglected home-keeping binder for the first time this week since the summer when I began the project. I have really only just begun, but here are a few of the items that I wanted to include...

First, let me say, I have found many, many helpful forms, printouts and calendars from www.donnayoung.org. The first section in my binder (which is filled with sturdy page protectors) is the calendar section. At Donna's site I found many printable calendars. My first page is a 2006 calendar , my next page is from 2006-2008, the third page (which I am still working on)is going to be a monthly list of all stationary feast days and *some* of the indulgences associated with those feasts. For this I am using Steve Kellmeyer's calendar called "The Beauty of Grace, A Calendar of Indulgences" available from Bridegroom press. (Just as an aside, this is a lovely calendar for all of the info. it provides re: indulgences, but someone needs to tell Mr. Kellmeyer that he needs to make the spaces in his calendar MUCH bigger. My husband desperately wishes that he could make this calendar into day planner form - this would make his life so much easier! ) In the calendar section I also have a monthly list of all birthdays, baptismal anniversaries, wedding anniversaries, ordination anniversaries etc. for our family and friends. So nice to remember the baptismal anniversaries of all of our God-children (seven, so far!), and the important dates for those we love.

The next section is going to be the grocery and meal planning section. I have (so far) included meal planning sheets, and a master grocery list. I want to write an index of all recipe titles that I normally use divided into sections (appetizer, main course, dessert etc) (I can't include recipes themselves in this section - not enough space!) This will help give me ideas for planning my meals for the week. I can look down the index of main dishes and say, "Chicken a L'orange, we haven't eaten that in a while!" and then dig up the recipe from there. Oh, how utterly organized I am in my imagination!!

A must for me is to include a 'daily schedule and routines' section...ummmmm not there yet, though!

I plan on the next section being my 'housework routines and cleaning schedule', but I still am trying to find out what works for us. Morning and evening routines ala Flylady are a must for me, but a housekeeping schedule ala Ma Ingalls might work better for me right now. Alas, I keep tweaking.. I have also printed (from a previous thread here) recipes for more natural cleaners for our home. This is also included in that section.

We just completed some landscaping, and a need arose for somewhere to keep plant instructions. So, I created another section, the "gardening" section which includes instructions for the care and feeding of the plants in around our home.

Though I am SOOOOO not there yet, I want to include sections for the following:
-important papers/documents that we need to refer to periodically.
-Instruction manuals for some of the appliances that I use the most
-Finances and budgeting section
- running "wish lists" for items around the home, gift ideas for family members, "to do" repair lists for around the home etc.

My homeschool notebook/planner is an entirely different binder. It just wouldn't be efficient for me to combine the two.

As you can see, I still have much to work on in this area. I can't wait to see what you ladies come up with!

There are some pretty household notebook forms at ORganized Home and a lot of useful ones at A Virtuous Woman (Protestant but I haven't seen any anti-Catholicism).

A blog post here Such Treasures
and Rachel has a neat blog post about her Home Notebook on her Classically Speaking blog-- lots of pics -- very useful!

Dawn just posted on her blog about her homekeeping notebook.

It's very detailed.

OOOH! I know I know! These are truly lovely and such an inspiration. Even my 4 year old daughter helped pick out the pretty paper for the dividers. My own notebook has been a slow work in progress. That said, something about putting pretty paper on the cover, and pretty dividers on the inside has really spurned the desire to update and (gasp) use it.

Thanks to both of you.

Ok, any tips on how to start a homekeeping binder? And actually use it? And store it? And get your husband and kids on board with the routines? And what if most of your kids are still little and doing their absolute best to tear down whatever you build up?

I bought a planner when I was pregnant with the twins. It was supposed to help me get organized. It is now sitting on top of my dryer, covered by a pile of stained and/or too-small clothing that also needs to be dealt with.

I have looked at all the blog posts. They are beautiful, but they seem so complicated to me! We desperately need some organization around here. We are taking baby steps in that direction. But I honestly think my head is going to explode.

Help?

Nancy, I wish I could say this was unusual. During this stage of this pregnancy, I seem to be plagued with insommnia! So I've been spending my time decluttering, organizing, making Christmas cards & gifts and yes, asking online questions in my continuing quest to become better organized!

Ladies!
Thank you SO much for all of the replies & links! I have become so inspired to continue working on my notebook.

Angela, I've tried store-bought planners & they've never met our families needs. I was always adding more stuff to them, making it difficult to locate something when I needed it.

I just gathered my supplies: binder, page protectors, those stick-on page divider labels & scrapbook paper I really loved. I started listing the things I wanted to keep inside the binder: DS12's altar serving schedule, choir, Scout and DH's call schedules; emergency information, telephone & addresses info, shopping list, etc. Basically, I ended up listing the things that are usually sitting in some pile on my kitchen counter! I gathered up ALL of the stacks of papers, magazines & catalogs I had stashed everywhere. I'm not proud of this, but it was ALOT. I sorted everything into loose categories, then I just started chipping away at the stacks, usually just a few minutes at a time. I threw away tons of things I didn't need or want. I actually amazed myself. I am planning to set up a file drawer similarly to Dawn's just to store liturgical and homeschooling type things I want to use.

I'm not done yet, but hope to be before this baby arrives.

Angela
