I just made a blog post that referenced Dawn at By Sun and Candlelight. Now, the purpose of a trackback is to let her know that, right? So do I enter her blog address in the trackback box? Her email address? Or am I totally doing this wrong?

Hi Jennifer! I *still* don't know how to do trackbacks, so I can't help you there, but wanted to say thanks for linking to me!

Jenn, I wasn't sure I completely understood it myself so this is copied from About.com:
Trackbacks are great to let people know that you've referenced someone else's work in your own weblog.
For example, you like to talk more about a tip or review that 'Blogger Z' started on his weblog. If you wish to talk about it in your own weblog instead of just leaving a comment, you can send a trackback to let him know that you've got more to say about the topic.
So, how do you send a trackback ping? The first thing to do is to get the trackback URL of the blog entry you wish to send a trackback ping to.
Copy that trackback URL on the blog entry you wish to reference. Then, when you write your own blog entry, you must use that URL in the space provided for trackbacks.
Most blogging systems that support the trackback function will have a section somewhere in the area where you create blog entries.
It will usually say something like 'Trackback URLs to ping' or 'Trackback URLs,' then there will be a box or space provided for adding trackback URLs.
When you publish your blog entry where you put the trackback URL in, it will automatically send a notification to the weblog that you referenced. So, there. You've sent a trackback!
You will know if your trackback worked when you see your blog entry being cross-referenced on the appropriate weblog that you sent a trackback ping to.
If you are referencing several weblogs about the same topic, most blogging systems will allow you to add more than one trackback URL in the space provided for.
Just make sure when you're sending trackback URLs that your weblog entry is relevant to the one you are referring to. Otherwise, you will be perceived as a trackback spammer. You might end up getting banned from other weblogs if you send irrelevant trackback pings.
Also, if you want to let people send trackback pings to your weblog, make sure that you have it enabled. Some blogging systems need extra plugins or third party services like HaloScan to enable this feature.
Send a Test Trackback!
As a way to try this out, you can check out this blog entry on Teaching and Learning Trackbacks on my personal weblog. Click on the 'Trackbacks' link. There, you'll find the trackback URL for that blog entry (http://www.shaicoggins.com/index.php/trackback/63/). You can try sending a trackback ping there. If your ping worked, you should find your trackback reference in that weblog entry. If there are people who already sent trackbacks to the blog entry, you will find references to these trackbacks as well. +=
------------
Me again, I don't know why but I rarely do this - I think I just need to get into the habit of it.
God bless,

So what I don't understand is that besides the permalink that sends readers back to that page, you have to do an additional trackback? Is that just buried in the code somewhere? Because the trackback URL won't go to the page I'm citing.

I'm assuming you mean the permalink you actually put in the post?
OK for example: This is the entry you permalinked to in your post. At the bottom of that entry just above the comments you will see that there is a track back URL for it ( http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/6111737 ). THAT is the URL you put in YOUR post's trackback section. I don't know what it looks like on Blogspirit but in WordPress it's at the bottom of the write a post page. I am assuming it's similar on Blogspirit.
The trackback will then ping Dawn's site and let her know you referenced her.
Does this help?

Right, because it's for pinging not viewing.

Yes, understanding that it's a ping make it all click. Blogspirit has automatic Trackback settings, so usually I don't need to worry about it. But I just found the little link to enter them. Thanks so much, Michele.

FYI,
Blogspot does not offer trackback. I am very tempted to switch to another provider. Hmm.
