Any knitters out there?
I'm about 6 weeks from my due date and I'd like to knit a few things for the baby we're preparing to greet. Does anyone have a newborn hat, sweater, and blanket pattern they would reccommend? Preferably easy patterns, since I've only got 6 weeks left...

Dawn, I spend so much time making baby things in my last trimester, diapers, soakers, booties, hats, etc... Oh I get all giddy just thinking that I get to do it all over again late this winter! :) I'm sorry I don't knit, I crochet and sew though. I'd LOVE to learn to knit one of these days! Belly Rubs from me! :)

Check Lion Brand Yarns for free patterns (both crochet and knit) or Coats and Clark -- the benefit of these two sites is the yarns are available at WalMart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.

Lisa, I'll make a deal with you...you teach me to crochet, and I'll teach you to knit! 
I can't believe how fast this pregnancy is going by...does it go by faster w/ each baby?? I knew I wanted to knit some things for this baby, and now, all of a sudden, I'm almost due!! Where have the months gone?
I just finished some booties for my brand new nephew, then I told myself, "Now, I'm knitting for MY baby!"
Mary, are there any baby patterns you've purchased that you'd reccommend?

I have used some patterns from the knitlist.com website, specifically the Apple Hat (minus the leaves) from '96 and the Rolled Brim hat from '97 .
I like a finer super wash wool on smaller needles but this weekend I saw a baby (probably 6-9 months) hat made with a bulky.
If the pattern is a stockinet I like the way a varigated fiber looks.
Some of the varigated sock yarns are washable and have great colors.

Dawn - in an effort to teach myself to knit (b/c I don't already have enough going on!  I checked out this book from the library. They have some VERY simple hats (and other stuff too).
Maybe your library has it too?

I haven't tried them personally, but have heard rave reviews of the Little Turtle Knits patterns. (Plus, they are super cute!)

I learned to knit last year, though I haven't knitted anything for a baby as our youngest is almost seven. Here is a very active web site, though. If you ask for baby pattern suggestions, you're sure to get some fast responses. There are TONS of free patterns online, too.

Oh, Patty, I love Heritage Hut...there's just so much to choose from, I'm experiencing a little option anxiety!
I've looked at the Little Turtle Knits patterns and the book Cici reccommends (my library does have it, and I love the bootie pattern in it--I have it memorized I've made them so many times). Neither of them have exactly what I'm looking for though...I'm looking for a pattern for a newborn hat, not really for wearing outside in cold weather, but just to keep a little head warm in the first couple of weeks...I thought I could knit one that looks cuter than the one they get at the hospital, kwim?
I'm imagining dressing my baby in a matching sweater/cardigan, booties, and hat for newborn pictures...

Dawn -- if you can give me a few hours, I'll see what I've got in my files; I have one design for a shawl collared baby jacket and matching hat using the self-striping sock yarn. I have some others I've done too as well as a bunch that I pulled together when I was running a "Knitting for Birthright" group at Church.
I'll let you know what I find.

Can I hijack this thread for a post or two? I'm going to teach myself to knit - using baby due in February as my "excuse" . I notice all the patterns in that "Knitting for baby" book call for wool.
While I wouldn't say I'm allergic to wool - I can't stand it. It smells to me (of course, no one else around me can smell it - it seems to be I'm the only one who is picking up these odors). Can I make the cardigans/booties/hat - well I'll start with the hat (similar to Dawn's idea) out of cotton? Will it wear nicely?

Mary G. will answer if it will wear nicely or not...but I'm chiming in about the wool. I'm allergic, most of my family is allergic, and I can't imagine putting wool next to any baby's skin. I know there's "soft" wool, but still.
Years ago I worked for a woman who had 7 children, knitted well. For one of her babies she made this lovely outfit in soft wool. She couldn't understand why her baby was covered in head-to-toe rash until the doctor said it was from the wool.
And I smell the wool, too. Bugs me to no end, and if I'm in a store too long, I get asthmatic.
But I hate acrylic. I feel like the skin can't breathe with it, so I always make my patterns with cotton. There are some nice blends of acrylic and cotton (more cotton) that I can tolerate, nice to knit, and holds the shape well, and washes in the washer. My son's baby blanket was that kind of yarn. I just loved it.

I have had a lot of luck with Knitting for Baby. It has a wide range of projects in varying degrees of difficulty. I bought mine at Michael's craft stores. If you want to borrow it, you are welcome to.
I also have a very old dittoed copy of a baby hat called a "Pilot's cap" simply because it fits snug with a twisted cord and covers the ears. My babies each had one and wore it all the time. I would also be glad to share it.

As with big people, wool can affect babies differently. I've always made my baby things in either a wool or cotton blended with an acrylic -- these keep their shape well, are machine washable and seem to hold up nicely. You're fortunate in that technology has greatly improved the manufacture of acrylic (basically any yarn not made of natural fibers) so that it's now soft and lovely.
Remember, when choosing any yarns to rub them against your own skin; some of the craft shops have swatches made of the yarns so you can feel how they feel (ok, that was a bad sentence!)
Don't be afraid to substitute yarns -- just check that they give about the same stated gauge as whatever your pattern calls for; for instance, if the pattern uses sport weight/#3/or 5-8 to the inch on #5 or #6 needle than look for yarn with one or all of those three designations. As always, do a swatch to confirm that the "fabric" is what you want -- stiff, soft, flowing, whatever -- as you think the fabric should be. Sometimes, when I've knitted to gauge, the fabric is too stiff so I change needles (sizing up) and alter the directions to allow for the new gauge....

Thanks. It is, believe it or not, relatively clear as mud.
Jenn, I'm glad I'm not the only one who who smells the woold. I once purchased a wool rug from Pottery Barn (clearance and I had an employee discount at the time, but still...) and the only thing I could think of when I sat in the room was how horrible it smelled. It took me the longest time to figure it out.
Wool (even the "soft" kind) feels too itchy to me. I know, babies are different, but I wouldn't put my baby in anything that smells to me and itches - I couldn't cuddle.
My daughter is hyper sensitive to all things soft - so I'll bring her to the store and have her help me pick out a great yarn. She'll love the "honors" of it.
