I've been reading The Thrifty Homeschooler for inspiration on canning and preserving. I have the Ball Blue Book for Canning, but have never tried, mostly because 1) I never grew enough veggies to can and 2) I didn't have the proper equipment.

Well, this weekend my sister in law gave me a big canning pot, the kind with the drop in wire holder for the jars. It's a porcelain covered pot. Here's my question -- I do have one. It's an old pot, I think it was my m-i-l's. There are rust edges inside the pot. Could those rust spots introduce or compromise the sterility of the boiled water method for the canning?

Hi Jenn -

I don't think it matters, but it does seem kind of yucky. You know who I bet would know the real answer? The Cooperative Extension. You can probably find their number in the Government section of your phone book. There is also a canning help line through Ball (the Blue Book folks); they have read me LONG recipes over the phone, as well as sending coupons for free jars when I had some brand new jars that did not perform as expected (they sheared off in the canner --weird).
