Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK, ladies, I own the sofa bed from &*^#@!!! My arthritic mother-in-law is visiting soon for 2 weeks. Should I replace the mattress (one of those thin box spring ones) or get a memory foam pad to put on top of the existing one? The main problem with the mattress is that it doesn't mask that iron bar feeling you get on sofa beds...

Thanks!

Nancy,
What about an aerobed mattress on top of the existing one? Do you think it might slide too much? It would be easier to store when not in use.

Well...we had a nice, 14" deep inflatable mattress for about a year...and it was just too tempting for my bouncy daughter and any young houseguests we happened to have. (Also, grandma and other adult guests permitted some bouncing that I'd forbidden... ) End result: leaking mattress and declaration from Dad that we can't buy any inflatable mattresses until Bouncer Girl can resist temptation (guess that means when she is old and grey like her mom!).

I liked my inflatable mattress. Sigh.

When our in-laws visited, we just gave them our room and we used the uncomfortable sofa bed. It was simpler than trying to figure out all different things that I would then have to store and try and keep up. We borrowed a mattress from my mom earlier - but then took it back as dc also had bouncy tendencies and were dragging it around and making the dog think it was a toy - ie if we hadn't removed it, I think the dog would have removed it in her own way. I know it isn't the most comfortable solution - but it might be the simplest! They also appreciated our master bath and not having to compete with all our dc for the facilities and I didn't have to worry about d toddler leaving his calling cards somewhere other than the toilet! Anyways, just an idea.

Well, we've tried that, too. The biggest problem is that my dh is 6'7" tall and I'm not exactly petite. We just don't fit on the sofa bed. The result is two totally cranky parents for two long weeks. Also, my mother-in-law has rheumatoid arthritis and prefers not to climb the stairs (where our room is).

We bought the air mattress when we moved out of our room for a month to make a space for my dd's godparents to stay. It was OK, but not great, for our sizes. It just didn't last very long!

I'm still trying to figure out if I could fold or roll up a memory foam pad and store it. I have one of those egg crate things (didn't solve my problem, but works great on Navy ships!), and it's a pain to store.

Nancy, something like this looks like it might help with the bar across the back problem. I haven't purchased one yet, but I'm planning to. In my family, we always call sofa beds "death beds"
