I was wondering what your opinions would be on this subject.
I am expecting our fifth child in mid December and have yet to find a doctor that we trust. The only midwives available would have to travel at least 2 1/2 hours to get to our home. I would also have to travel to the midwife for appointments.
I have had no complications with any of my previous pregnancies. All were completely drug-free labor & deliveries. Also, all of our babies have been big (between 9lbs. & 11lbs.) No one had any complications after birth.
My dh is an MD (family practice with certification in OB). During residency he delivered many babies. He doesn't practice OB currently because the insurance rates are so astronomical.
Our first two children were born overseas. During my pregnancies with the two younger ones I joked that we should have gone back overseas to have them. We had an amazing doctor over there.
Anyway, I'm curious in your opinions. Does this sound in any way irresponsible?

We were in this boat several years ago. No midwife and dh is a fam doc, too.
He is capable of doing a lot. However, if a crisis hits, sometimes people (even docs) panic with their own family.
Dh now jokes about being handed the scalp electrode with my dd as I was hemorraging before hte doc got to the hosptial and his hand was so shaky he could hardly do it, but this is something he does to his patients all the time. My doctor, a perinatologist who daily does c-sections, was also joking how he had to be helped to a chair by the nurses during his wife's c-section because he got light-headed!
Anyway, I thought I'd just throw that in.
My dh in the end decided not to be a part of a home birth because in the event of a crisis (which did indeed happen with that particular child), he would have had SERIOUS professional ramifications. His clinic full of Catholic Docs who adhere to the Church's teaching in regards to Birth Control did not need that on their plate. We decided to plan a hosptial birth. Home Birth in Nebraska is not looked upon lightly. I believe St. Joseph really watched out for us because I ended up abrupting at home when my water broke (before I'd even gone to the hospital) which would have ended in disaster!
It was because she was so big-10lbs 7oz.
That's my input. It might be a lot to put on your husband. In the end, if he's willing--then it could be great. If he has any apprehension, listen to him. You wouldn't want him to blame himself if there was something he couldn't handle.
Hard decision!

You didn't mention how close you are to a good hospital should the need arise? That's really essential, imho.
I've read stories about women doing it. I presume St. Joseph delivered the Lord.
I wouldn't do it. I'd be too scared (I did have a home birth with a midwife, so I'm not altogether freaked out by the idea).
Then again, my dh is not an MD. That changes things for me. I would want another person there for safety, though. Is there are good doula or maybe a midwife in training or an L and D nurse to assist your dh?
Don't know if this helps, much. In the end I think its not just a matter of "are we crazy?" but also how you feel God is leading you. We never felt led to have a home birth again. I don't know why. But I have to have God's peace about it before I plan on it.
