Could you tell me what your girls do when they ride bikes if they are wearing skirts? Is this a time when they change into shorts or sweats or do they wear skorts? My daughter asked me to ask y'all. She has figured out how to jump on the tramp with a skirt - she wears leggings underneath but not how to ride a bike. So for now she just puts on shorts. She loves wearing skirts but we don't have it all figured out yet!
thanks so much,
Hollee

Hollee,
This is a great question. We ride bikes all the time and the kids wear shorts or sweats depending on the weather. We don't wear skirts/dresses every day (trying to wear more, though), so this isn't really an issue for us. I would think there might be an issue with getting a long skirt caught in the bike, etc. I'm sure someone here has figured this out and will give great advice!

My 8yo dd wears shorts in the summer/tights in the winter under her play dresses/skirts. She loves the long skirts like I always wear, but for playing all of her dresses/skirts are right below the knee. We haven't had a problem with them. I think it would be much harder if her skirts were very long. Oh, and all of her skirts/dresses are full in the waist so there is no trouble with movement. No trouble riding bikes or horses yet!
HTH,
Angela

Growing up, I usually wore dresses by choice. I have photos of me riding my bike wearing a dress and I don't remember ever thinking about it. That said, I know that I tell my beginning riders to wear jeans when they ride their bikes. I would rather have ripped pants, than scraped up knees.
One last thought, in The Sound of Music, I think the girls wore their play clothes dresses.

Hi Hollee, my dd and I just found some great knit coulottes at Marhall's, they are just below the knee and so comfortable for biking, trampoline, etc. They are fuller than shorts and so still look a bit like a skirt with the flexibility of a short (no panties showing) for those upside down times!! HTH.
Note: Marshall's is probably like a TJMaxx or Mervyns or Burlington Coat Factory if that helps at all for a comp store

I was thinking of them as well!
I found some of the coulotte style shorts in a heavy knit fabric, like Meredith is describing, at Target a while back.

Thanks for the ideas! Sound of Music is one of our favorite movies (dh and dd are watching it as I type!). Dd's skirts are more of the long slim ones which don't work as well on bikes so I will have to get her some of the more flowing ones. (although she says she worries those will get caught in the wheels or something.) The coulottes sound like a great idea too. I think she would love those! She also has one short skirt that might work out well for bike riding (although she will definitely need a pair of shorts under it)
I appreciate all your ideas. I know you all don't really know me at all, but I am beginning to think of you guys as new friends. We live in an area with few Catholics and I miss having Catholic Mom friends to bounce ideas off of! We moved from the NoVa area and I did not realize all the implications of moving to an area with few Catholics!
Thanks
Hollee
