It has been a long time since I watched a baby take his first steps, or taught a young one how to read, so I must take joy in the little rites of passage for my older kids . Joy, and yet...OM gosh !
Tonight, after 10 years of classes every Tuesday night, Libby graduated from German school, first in her class, and delivered a sweet little speech on her years studying to the faculty, parents and students. When she finished, principal of the school suggested that they need more students like Libby. I'll put the text up on Mousey Trails later, for those of you who speak (or read) German. Tomorrow, she takes the statewide exam in German, and must go right from there to LaGuardia to get to her summer music festival. Unlike other years, we will not be able to go with her, or even visit (unless plans change). She will be gone for 9 weeks, and will turn 16 while away.
Tonight, after the ceremony, we went to the festival at St. Gregory's...we ate cotton candy and zeppole, and listened to really bad Cajun "style" music. She met some friends there from other activities--softball, St. Greg's Choir, the neighborhood--and conversed easily on many different subjects. We had such fun. I am going to miss her this summer. I can hardly breathe.
Someone once said that the best thing about homeschooling is seeing our kids become the kind of people with whom we like to spend time...it's true, but how bittersweet the parting!
Deep breath, MacB. Tomorrow is a busy day!
I'd like to add a special thanks to an Internet friend who will meet Libby at the airport on the other end, and take her to her destination--no short drive. I am so very blessed.

I'll pray for you and Libby tomorrow. What a neat accomplishment. . .
I can imagine your sorrow and joy at the same time. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, MacBeth. I want to be strong for you but . After Devin came home after a week away at my sister's home in NC, I told her that she didn't have to study Algebra, she wasn't going to college, and marriage was WAY over-rated. She can just stay with me forever .
I'm so proud of both of you and happy for your accomplishments...to include sharing an example of a wonderful mother-daughter relationship. I'm praying for a smooth transition.
Love,

What a touching tribute to your daughter. As a mother who will soon have a son going off to college I can relate to those feelings. It is so neat to see them become such terrific people. It is like you said bittersweet for us - there is sadness, yet excitement and anticipation. I also think of all those people whose lives these young people will touch when they go out away from us.
We will be praying for Libby to have safe travels and a great summer, and for mom to have comfort during the time away.
Blessings,

Oh, MacBeth! We're praying for Libby's safe trip and for you while she's gone. I was just thinking about Libby the other day. She's a beautiful, talented, well-rounded young lady -- quite a treasure. She was our inspiration for trying violin (which Nicholas has decided to continue after a year of hard work and struggle). Wish I could read German...
How rewarding (and painful) it is to watch young ones preparing to fly.

That bittersweetness just makes your chest feel so tight doesn't it?
Will you be alone in the car after she leaves so you can have a good ?
When Maggie went to England last year I cried all the way to the PA border from Newark-felt good and I did not have to explain it to anyone.
You have my Mom prayers today.

Thanks all, for your virtual shoulders. She's off! Actually, I was much better at the airport than at home. The folks at check in were very nice, and reminded me that though she is young, she is not really traveling as an official unaccompanied minor. I think that's some kind of technicality.
I am very excited for her. She has friends who are already at the music festival, and she knows some of the faculty from other summers, and home. She'll be fine.
Don just mentioned something about driving out west with the kids...maybe . I'm trying not to jump for joy, but that would be great.
Another milestone--I just let the two younger kids (10 and 12) go to the pizza place alone for dinner and dessert (2 blocks, right next to Don's office). I'm getting old !
Thanks again, dear friends, for your kind words. Angie, I can't imagine asking her to do a thing when she gets home!

Hey MacBeth:
We're out west too, now (Northern Utah). But I must caution you about going to Vegas. My husband and oldest stopped through Las Vegas when they went to LA to pick up our car. They were both disappointed when my husband stopped with my ds to let him see what my dh thought would be a relatively worry-free show. The once innocent outdoor free show that the Treasure Island hotel puts on is way under-dressed ... er ... I mean, it *used* to be a battle between pirates and English soldiers (or they might have been Spaniards, I don't remember anymore). Now it's between the pirates and bikini-clad women. Is that crazy or what?
My oldest, almost 12, came home asking, "Weren't they embarrassed to wear so little?" He's a gem. We had a little talk about how lots of people don't respect their bodies as temples of the spirit that God gave each of us.
God bless,
