Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone tried this? I was asked to help the Cub Scout Day Camp folks with translating their summer day camp flyer into Spanish, which I don't speak. The "flyer" turns out to be a complex, four-page brochure with all kinds of directions to various spots, registration forms, etc. This is not something I can do alone, but I don't want to make any silly translation errors...I know from experience how embarrassing that can be!

All advice appreciated.

I'd try it, but I wouldn't rely on it alone. My suggestion is to consult a native Spanish speaker -- maybe a parent? If there are enough people in your area that you need a Spanish flyer then perhaps there are people that can help?

I use Babelfish regularly but some of the translations come out REALLY funny, like one recipe that asked me to put 1/2 pound of "Pope" in -- Babelfish translated "papa" into "Pope", instead of potatoes.

I have used it and I speak Spanish pretty well and just needed it to help me conjugate a few words for some reports for work.

It is very literal and does NOT understand any common expressions.

For example:
I typed in: "Joe is a 5 year old boy" and got a literal translation of "Joe is 5 year, old person" literally meaning like an "old man" to the Spanish speaker. Sounds something like how we might use the word "relic" or "antique". Totally wrong.

I changed it to literal Spanish grammar like "Joe is a boy who has 5 years" and got the correct Spanish sentence.

I would not rely on it completely unless a Spanish speaker reviews the final product.

Well, that's kind of the problem...up here there are no native Spanish speakers (that I know of) and the Navy folks I know who speak the language are either on temporary duty elsewhere or are leaving within days. Sigh.

The silly part is, the area where the Spanish-speaking kids are (down the mountain, an hour away from me) apparently doesn't have adult Scouters who are willing or able (don't know which) to take on this project.

Thanks!
Nancy

Nancy,
I am a native Spanish speaker. Is there a way I could help you?
