Hi Donna,
We have smoothies almost everyday around here. I'm not even quite sure of the recipe as I kind of "wing it". Basically this is it:
1 cup plain yogurt
1 cup orange juice
1 banana
1 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
Mix in a blender. You can also add ice. I will substitute fresh fruit (peaches, yum!) when it's in season. You can also use other juices.
Enjoy!

Brenda's sounds great!! My little guy 4 loves smoothies so we make them pretty regularly too and everyone always wants some too
We do 1 banana, several fresh or frozen strawberries, about 1/2 cup silken tofu, 1/2 cup plain organic yogurt, enough organic milk (or rice or soy milk) for desired consistency, a little honey if necessary and sometimes a generous splash of orange juice!! Blend and enjoy! You can also put in some flax meal or wheat germ for extra healthy

We use:
Berry Smoothie
frozen or fresh strawberries or mixed berries
orange juice
wheat germ
Isabella also LOVES mango smoothies, so her recipe is:
sliced mango
orange juice
crushed ice
I'm sorry I don't have measures....we just do it by "feel."
We love smoothies, though! Great thread!

Agreed! I don't have a recipe of my own to share (yet) but we recently decided to make Saturdays our Smoothie days! We figured it is a busy day when we all need a quick breakfast and a little more energy (I love the ideas for sneaking in healthy stuff, Meredith! ).
Now, who can recommend a good blender? Ours (an Oster) went kaput a few months ago. (What is it with me and electronics lately? )

We really like orange-pinepaple juice, pineapple, (maybe some mango), plain full-fat yogurt, and coconut milk. My big boys love to "play bartender" using this book!

Years ago, we bought a Vita Mix. It is an industrial strength blender with capabilities of grinding wheat, making fresh peanut butter, etc. as well as your usual blender functions. I got rid of my food processor when I bought it. They are expensive but I have had mine for 13 years and use it almost every day. It shows no sign of slowing down and is easy to clean.
edited to add: BTW, we bought a reconditioned, used machine. At that time, they cost less than half of what the new machines cost. It is still going strong.

My daughter made these last summer and they are to die for- definitely NOT something you would drink every day!
Raspberry-Chocolate Smoothie
Vanilla yogurt
milk
semisweet chocolate chips
rapberry jam
add ice (or ice cream) to desired consistancy

Donna,
What to do with the four ounces left in the blender when everyone's had their fill of smoothies?
Keep a popsicle mold on hand and add leftover smoothies to it as you go (or make a batch of smoothies specifically for popsicles). Target had molds a couple of weeks ago but prior experience tells me they won't be around long.

Meredith, Can you taste the tofu? I have thought of doing this in the past but never tried it because I was afraid to waste the tofu if dc did not like it. We make one similar to Brenda's but with three tablespoons of protein powder in it (for my one vegetarian child). He is not fond of the protein powder's texture. I wonder if the tofu would add a similar amt. of protein without the grit .

Rebecca,
Have you tried the Trader Joe's whey protein? My ids will tolerate that. They won't do silken tofu.

No, you actually can't, it's virtually tasteless. It also gives the smoothies an extra creamy texture, and then if you need to omit the dairy you still hve the creamy. Otherwise, without it's more like a slushy which is divine on a really hot day

My favorite Smoothie-type drink:
Mango Lassi
9 ounces plain yogurt
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup fresh mango, stoned and sliced (you can use frozen or canned, too)
4 teaspoons sugar, to taste, or feel free to try salt and cardamom seeds
Put all the ingredients into a blender and blend for 2 minutes, then pour into individual glasses, and serve. The lassi can be kept refrigerated for up to 24 hours
