I wasn't sure how to search for this. I am in charge of snacks for our Moms Group. I volunteered to do this because I am a diabetic and the treats are ALWAYS cakes or cookies. One of the Moms I know has an eating disorder and I just felt like there had to be treats that were more health-friendly.

Anyways, I've done bruscetta (big hit!) and a dill dip with veggies (another hit) and I am now at a loss. Any ideas for snacks that will make these ladies feel special without being just cookies or cakes? And what do you think, do I need to also bring cookies? Do women feel gypped if they don't get a sugary snack?

I LOVE the chocolate I get at mother's night out meetings cause I try to limit it at home but I understand where your coming from. For one early summer get together our group had several years ago, I brought pounds of fresh strawberries and made a fruit dip to go with it. It was a big hit. Banana Bread and blueberries was also well received.

I have a dear friend who is very health conscious and I never had a problem with the health oriented foods she brought to get togethers. I rather enjoyed trying new things and incorporated many of her dishes into our own family foods.

Our mom's night out have featured:
Hummus- garlic-yum!
Cherry tomatoes from someone's garden
Pumpkin bread
Spinach dip
Peas - in the pod

Simple foods but easy to eat and gab at the same time!

Oh yes, the bean dip!

1.Refried beans on the bottom layer,
2.Gaucamole
Instead of gauc you can use 2 avacadoes and a little lemon juice
3.Mix 16oz sour cream with a taco seasoning
4.Shredded cheese
5.Tomatoes, black olives, and scallions

Serve with tortilla chips. This makes a great Friday meatless meal too.

A few ideas for you.   

Hummus with baby carrots or those bags of crinkle cut carrot chips.

Celery with peanut butter or cream cheese - plain or with chopped olives.

Guacamole and tortilla chips.

Fruit salsa
Fruit Salsa is made with 2 med. apples chopped, 1 cup strawberries, sliced, 1 kiwi, peeled and chopped, 1 small orange peeled with sections diced. Mix fruit with two tablespoons of brown sugar and 2 tablespoons apple jelly.
Serve with cinnamon chips. Spray or lightly sprinkle four 7 inch flour tortillas with water to slightly dampen. Sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar and bake in a 400* oven for 10 minutes.   
1 serving is 70 calories and 1 gram of fat (a serving is 2 Tablespoons of salsa and two chips)

Michelle, to answer your question, cookies are not necessary.    If you feel you need to bring cake, a light idea is slices of angel cake with fresh fruit.

Oh my gosh, no! I wouldn't feel gypped at all. In fact, if I ate something sugary, you'd have to drive me home a half hour later, literally. I have such bad hypoglycemia that I've stopped eating in public places because I'm never sure just how far my blood sugar will crash.

Fresh fruit and cheese kabobs could be fun--some protein and fat to balance the fruit.

Would you post the dip recipe? And yes, it often happens that the snack ends up being dinner for several moms. I was thinking this morning that I might make some mini quiches for tonight, and bring the fixings for strawberry shortcake. That way, those who want less sugar could have quiche and berries and those who want more could make themselves strawberry shortcake, and those who skipped dinner at least have some protein...

Thanks for the GREAT ideas! The hummus is on my list for next month, yum! And cherry tomatoes will be in season next month.

I need to provide snacks every month, so please keep the ideas coming!

the gorgonzola dip is a breeze:
1 c gorgonzola (or blue cheese)
1 c plain yogurt
2 T olive oil
salt to taste.
mash with a fork and serve with sliced tomatoes and basil.

i can't wait for garden tomatoes to be ready - i might just eat this all day long.

The stand-by for our group is a block of cream cheese topped with bottled raspberry chipotle sauce. I have been known to serve it to myself for lunch the next day, so you may want to buy an extra block of philly for yourself!

I'm with Elizabeth! I cringe when there are receptions and not one bit of protein. For my pregnancy I developed gestational diabetes and at a wedding shower had a few snacks I thought were balanced and my blood sugar just skyrocketed. Non-pregnant times it just crashed. Although I love sweets, I need to balance!

I love deviled eggs for a party food.
Another idea (more time involved) is chicken, egg or tuna salad in small cream puffs...little tea sandwiches with a twist.
Cheese and Artichoke dip, offering different times of scoops: chips, whole wheat bread or crackers, French bread
