Hello!
I have been following the skirt thread and have gone back and forth in the past between always wearing dresses and not. I think I am back to skirts only and am happy to do so. Now could some of you who have been doing this for a long time recommend several things for me?
1) Favorite shops to buy skirts or dresses for me?
2) Favorite patterns or such more me?
3) Favorite stores for dd? She is 8 and tall for her age so probably wears a size 10 or maybe even a 12. Fairly thin but does not wear slims.
4) Patterns for same dd. She has one dress that she dearly loves and calls her Little House dress. She also looks through the Catholic Treasure Box books and points out the dresses in there and asks for them. I just don't think I am going to find those types of dresses in the stores!
Now I am not a seamstress and know nothing about sewing but think I am going to have to learn. Or are there good places to buy dresses like these? Any recommendations along those lines are appreciated also!

I really like Coldwater Creek's skirts. I only purchase them from the outlet section of their website.
For my girls, I buy dresses from Lands' End or make them myself.
There are a few other stores that I have found online, but they are too expensive. I do not buy from Hanna Anderson, as they donate to Planned Parenthood. If you find any good and affordable places, please let me know.

I don't sew either, but I saw Walmart and Jo-Ann Fabrics have skirt fabric that already has elastic at the top, all you do is buy and sew up the side! Instant skirt! I thought I would try that.
I like Hannah Lise also. They are a company online, sorry I don't know how to do links. They are reasonably priced, shipping is fast and their skirts are stylish yet modest. (no slits) I bought skirts there for my dds and myself this year.
I have found some beautiful skirts at church rummage sales and Goodwill type stores. A sale at our parish recently filled my closet with Talbot clothing! I think I paid a total of $15 for everything! Some of the nicer second hand items I buy, I'll have dry cleaned. It's still cheaper than new!
I see your in VA. Are there any historic festivals you could attend? They usually have vendors who make homemade period clothing to sell. I wear stylish/modest clothing out in public but have no problem allowing my daughters to dress in period clothing when going out. (I usually have a Roy Rogers and a Robin Hood in tow too)

Some of you mentioned in the skirts & modesty thread that most skirts are very unflattering on your figure. The most flattering skirt I have found for most figures is a "gored" skirt. These skirts usually have 6 or 8 seperate panels. For those of you who sew Simplicity 4881 includes a gored & bias skirt.

I have found that skirts with a pattern are less likely to show greasy fingerprints and stains than solid colored skirts. Denim would be the exception. So, I avoid twill and solid colored skirts. Usually I wear a white or black shirt with a skirt. (Annie made a similar comment.)
Since skirts come in a variety of cuts and fabrics, it isn't always a simple matter to find the proper shirt to go along with it. This may be a factor for some in giving up on skirts and sticking with jeans/slacks. Pretty much any t shirt, collared shirt, sweatshirt, sweater, turtle neck.... you name it, looks great with a pair of jeans. Unfortunately, this is not the case with skirts. As recommended in another thread, I would also recommend buying the complete package - skirt and shirt together, that match, at the same time. There is nothing more frustrating than to look at a closet full of clothes (and even if everything is totally modest) and have nothing to wear! Personally, I find it better to have two or three Sunday outfits (going to the doctor outfit, being seen outfit) than a lot of clothes that I can't wear. (These are all the mistakes I've made over the years.)
I used to balk at the prices in Coldwater creek (but I do most of my shopping there) but when I started adding some things up, for example:
I hit the clearance rack at Macy's I pick up items that cost:
$13, $10, $8, $15
All good prices and I figure later on I'll get something to match or something will just work out. I've just spent $46 on clothes that will never see the light of day.
So, for double that price at Coldwater Creek, I get an outfit that matches and it lasts me at least three years. AS long as I don't go to the store and get tempted by the clearance rack, the money spent on the outfit will be worth it in the long run.
In Home Comforts, the author (I just ran to my bookshelf, Cheryl Mendelson) has a detailed chapter on washing rayon. My clearance rack rayon skirts I wash in the machine. Not all rayon is the same, and I'm willing to take the chance of washing by machine my cheap, everyday skirts. (Coldwater Creek sells a lot of machine washable clothing.) But, you don't have to wash your skirts everyday if you have a good supply of slips. Slips seem to last forever, no matter how much you wash them, and they don't need ironing.
I'm having difficulty finding ordinary T Shirts. It seems the basic shirt, not too long and not too tight is gone. Even Eddie Bauer seems to have gotten tighter. (Or is it me?  )

Nope. It's not just you. And my recent bathing suit experience has confirmed for me that the same size and same brand can be very different when separated by several years.

It doesn't have to be double the price, Coldwater Creek has very good sales. It's just that it causes me psychic pain to spend more than $20 on myself, so, these are my rationalizations.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I'm going to spend some of my free time tonight looking at those stores! I am really happy to be be doing the skirt thing...I was already conscious of the length of shorts or depth of necklines but really ready to take it a step further.
My dd's inclinations already were to be dresses or skirts only so I do not want to lose out on that initiative in her. She has been asking me for several years to make her dresses like those of St. Therese in the Catholic Treasure Box books...I am just not a skilled seamstress at all so maybe I need to look into some type of reproduction type dresses/makers
Again thanks for all the input! I just need a few outifts for both of us!
