I have a question for those of you who enjoy country music. A few years ago, I began the habit of listening to the local country station when I am alone in the van. In general, I really like it. There are a surprising number of songs with wholesome, positive messages. However, there is also a significant amount of the completely inappropriate stuff that makes me change the station, so I don't listen to the radio with my girls.
Recently one of my girls asked me if we could start listening to that station together because they really like the country music they've heard on cd. (Alan Jackson is our favorite, but even with him I have to skip songs on the cd.) I am unwilling to listen to the radio with the girls, due to the mixed bag. I did however, decide that I'd like to download an album worth of songs to burn for our listening pleasure. (I can actually get them all free, due to a special offer on our toothpaste boxes. Gotta love that!)
This is a long-winded way of asking for suggestions for great current (not oldies, from the past five years or so) country songs that would be appropriate for the entire family to listen to. I know I've heard many songs that would be wonderful for this, but I have a terrible memory and haven't been alone in the van, and thus listening to the radio, much lately. They can be love songs or songs about family life or even funny songs, just clean ones.
Any ideas?

I have mentioned this before on a thread but I didn't know how to hyperlink back then so I will pop it on this thread instead. I have homeschooling friends of mine here in Australia who have just produced a Country Music CD about Angels, here is their website you can hear samples of their music, I don't know whether you are only looking for music that is free but I thought I would mention this since it is Catholic and country!
This CD has won many awards here in Australia and they had a lot of trouble getting it completed, funnily enough their company released it on either the feast of the archangels or the guardian angels (only days apart from each other) can't remember now which feast it was but I remembering thinking what a lovely sign for them! So I am sure this CD would be a blessing to those who hear it.

Hmmm...I'm on a current Johnny Cash binge (DH and I finally watched Walk The Line on DVD), so my brain isn't doing this readily. But I've been sitting here for about ten minutes running songs through my head and recognizing that you have plenty from which to choose.
Here's the caveat: go to Cowboy Lyrics and just be sure that what's okay for you is the same as what's okay for me  .

We are a country music lovin' family here. 
Yes, there are raunchy songs out there but country music is pretty much as close to God and family as you can get in today's world...has its roots in gospel music, of course.
This song has beautiful lyrics and the music amplifies the beauty 10-fold.

Those are two I really like. For some reason, I can't just sit here and remember songs off the top of my head. I'll be driving and hear something and definitely know it enough to sing along. But unless I write it down right then and there, it's out of my head until the next time I hear it. This mommy's brain seems very pitiful sometimes. . .

That's a favorite from our Alan Jackson cd. Even my 3yo asks, "Can we listen to Little Bitty?"

There are some more that I know and like. I will definitely include Mr. Mom. What a cute song! I completely agree about Angry American. I can't help but smile imagining him singing that song in front of a crowd of our young soldiers over in Iraq. I like American Soldier a lot, so that's a good possibility. Toby Keith is such a mixed bag -- some songs are fine, but others have me changing the radio station almost immediately!
And Cay, I don't recognize the first two you mentioned, but I'll check them out. Concrete Angel is beautiful, but so sad. Thanks!

We like Gary Allen's- Tough little boys ( my husband fav.) And also some of his new ones dealing with his wife's death: Sailed away and Life isn't always beautiful but its a beautiful ride.
Trace Adkins can't remember the name but it deals with kids growing up and moving on. (mom's fav.) And also his Arlington song. (being a mom of an army guy I like this and An American Solider)

We really like the Judds and the Dixie Chicks. Also Keith Urban "Who wouldn't want to be me" and Jo Dee Messina ("Bye-Bye", "I'm Alright"). Ds favorite is Kenny Chesnee, but some of his are not very appropriate for younger kids. I like Clint Black ("Like the Rain") alot but have not heard much from him lately. Allison Kraus "When You say Nothing at All" and "Whiskey Lullaby" (sad, but lovely). "Jesus Take the Wheel" is awesome, and I don't know who sings it but we really love the new song "Who Says you Can't Go Home"-very catchy!

I believe this is by Jon Bon Jovi with the woman from Sugarland. I just heard it today. I love country, but I do change the channel on many songs when the kids are in the car with me.

When I was in Savannah last Sept. to see my son and his buddies off to Iraq, one of them brought the CD along for a car ride to the beach. There we were, me, the two youngest dd's, with these four young men, windows down, and them belting out the words to this song. Every time I hear it now I could just

Toby Keith just gave a concert for the soliders at my son's base in Germany. It was all free, Toby paid for the whole thing himself. Chris got to meet him afterwards and shake his hand. But he forgot his camera!
He said he made "An American Solider" the last song and made it last a long time. Chris said that it was so awesome to see and hear so many Joe's singing together that song.
Another one we like is Jimmy Wayne's "Paper Angels" and
" I Love You This Much".

Oh! Allison Kraus is wonderful! I wanted to play one of her songs at my wedding instead of The March but it rained, so we had no music since the local musicians couldn't get down the impassible dirt road to the Herb Garden that day.
I hear Allison homeschools her son.
The Cherryholmes are pretty awesome (and homeschooled) but I haven't run any of the lyrics through. Though I'd have to think (hope?) they are pretty clean being written by kids in a Bluegrass Family Band.

I called my husband and read Elizabeth's list of country singers to him. He could have written Elizabeth's post. Clint Black and some of Alison Krauss' songs would also be on his list. Our first dance at our wedding reception was to Alison Krauss' "When You say Nothing at All".

Now there's a fun rabbit trail: Ours was Lee Greenwood's "I Owe You." I'd never heard it before that dance and I cried through it.
