Do any of you grind your own grains? I'm interested in opinions of grain mills.

I have the largest Kitchen Aid they make & was considering purchasing the grain mill attachment. However, I read some poor reviews on amazon.com so I'm hesitant to go ahead with that one. I know the Bosch is wonderful, but I don't need the mixer, my KA works fine for that.

Do you or have you had a grain mill? What did you see as the pros or cons of your mill?

Thanks so much!

Angela

i have a nutrimill, which came highly recommended by the people at the yahoogroups mixer-owners. i've had it for about a year and am very happy with it. no cons as far as i'm concerned.

I have a nutrimill too and I love it! I also had a kitchenaid, but I let it go and replaced it with a Bosch...I find the motor seems to handle the load I put on it by making whole grain bread. The kitchen aid couldn't do the same job.

HTH!

Ooh, I'm really interested in this too as I would love to be grinding our grains!! I usually buy all the bob's Red Mill products, but they come in such small quantities that we use them up SOO fast A new neighbor has the Bosch and I would love to see hers, maybe I'll ask for a demonstration

Thanks for bringing this up!!

I posted this question on another board I read & it seems everyone loves their Bosch!

I would actually love to have one. My friend demonstrated bread baking for our Keepers At Home group a few months ago. The wheat smelled amazing when she ground it. I was very impressed with how the Bosch worked, but since I already have a KA I thought I could get by with just a separate mill. It seems no one has anything good to say about the KA grain mill attachment.

Stef, what mixer do you use for your breadmaking? How many loaves do you mix at one time?

Donna Marie, does your Bosch have the grinder attachment? Did you decide not to purchase that because you already had your Nutrimill? Also, how many loaves are you mixing at once?

Thanks for sharing your experiences! This is such a big expense I want to make sure I get all the information I can before I present this to DH!

Elisabeth, I don't bake bread as much as I used to (family allergies) but when I baked I'd do about 4 loaves at a time. I have an Electrolux Assistent -- after "killing" 2 KitchenAids with my whole grain doughs, etc.

one of our favorite recipes: denise's whole wheat bread

I have a Nutrimill, Kitchen Aid and Zo bread machine. I have had the KA for about 13 years, I am hoping it will die soon so I can get a Bosch or Electrolux. I grind the grain in the Nutrimill, then if I am making bread I put in in the Zo on the dough feature then bake in the oven. For cookies, muffins, pizza and such my KA is so far hanging in there.
I did not go with the KA grain grinder attachment because the reviews I read were not positive. I have been very happy with my Nurtrimill. I am stocking up on grains this Thursday down in Richmond, I am looking forward to making bread again!
As for the pros of my Nutrimill I guess that it can grind almost anything and it does it quickly. Our only con so far is that the cats got hold of this foamy??? piece and destroyed it. Hmm maybe that is more of a con of having cats , anyway Breadbeckers sent me a new one quickly and free of charge.

I'm bumping this up as I'm in the market for a mixer. Does anyone have any comparisons on the Bosch vs. the Electrolux? Thx!

here you go, Brenda - this one is from Beth Holland

from Mountain Tops Milling - reviews

and no comparison at Denise's, but she loves her Bosch

you can "meet" all these folks and ask them questions directly at the yahoogroups Mixer-Owners

got bad news about my nutrimill though -- it's dead right now after i tried to grind millet in it. and hubby hasn't had the time to take it apart and find out what's wrong...

I like my Whisper Mill grain mill and my Bosch mixer that I bought from Pleasant Hill Grain.

Hi Amie,

I've been wondering why you didn't use the grain mill that attaches to the Bosch vs. purchasing a seperate one? Thx!

Well, at the time I bought them, Pleasant Hill Grain had a deal where you got a discount buying the Bosch and the Whisper Mill together. When I read the specs on the Whisper Mill it apparently met my requirements at the time I bought it. I wanted something that was fast and not too noisy, fast being the most important part. I still can't turn it on when there is a sensitive baby napping. There really isn't anything such as a truly quiet grain mill.

Beyond that, I can't recall ever looking at the grain mill attachment for the Bosch - probaby one of those "mommy mush brain" moments.

All that talk about making 6 loaves in 90 minutes or less is true though. The mill and mixer are the keys to great textured/tasting bread fast.

Have any of you ever ground spelt in your mills? I was wondering how that would turn out...and I was afraid to try it out for fear of my mill getting ruined. I joined a bread yahoo group but no one could tell me one way or the other about milling spelt at home.

amie, i haven't tried spelt but i don't see why it won't work. aren't the grains very similar to wheat? i could be wrong though, look what i did with my nutrimill, and that was just millet!
