I just finished The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey

It had all the things I like about old English novels: a mystery, complex characters, the ubiquitous Matron, interesting descriptions and dialogue and lots of wit. Only thing missing: not enough cups of tea

It also made me wonder... do people still stay in the hospital for weeks for things like a broken leg? Or does that belong to another time?

Another time. They get people out as fast as possible. People tend to heal better at home and there's less hospital caused illness when they get them out.

But some of that is better ways to keep a broken leg set without needing to keep you immobile.

There's still things that will keep you in the hospital for weeks.. traction needed etc. Just look at Ruth's daughter already being home.
