Just got a smartphone and am looking to make it a good tool in household management.
Does anyone have any recommendations for good apps for that? I'm looking for a good grocery list one especially.

We use Cozi because several of us have smartphones and the app works across devices. So, once you sign up for an account, you get the app on your smartphone, and if your dh has a smartphone, he grabs the app, too. Same with any teen/drivers in the family that may have smartphones. THEN...you add milk, cheese, whatever...to the cozi grocery list, and just ask someone to pick something up on the way home. You can create several different grocery lists - so one for Costco, one for your primary grocery store, one for Lowes/hardware...and on and on. Now, all your lists are in one place and you update them as you come across a need and then the next time you're in the store, your list is always updated.
This one app has several useful features. We keep our home improvement lists on there, too. The app updates in real time so everyone in the family that has the app gets updated lists. The app has a calendar, shopping lists, to do lists. It's free, but for the first time (we've been using the app for several years) we updated to Cozi Gold and we're hooked!

Do you use the calendar for Cozi, Jen? Or any other digital calendar in addition to your paper planner?
I do prefer a paper planner for myself, but I keep thinking that a digital calendar would be easier for keeping dh and I on the same page regarding appointments and such.

We use iCal for our coordinated family calendar and also for our liturgical calendar. My husband and older kids like the liturgical calendar on iCal so that they can anticipate things like Ember Days in their week.
The family calendar is shared between myself, my husband, and my teens. All our calendars update, alarm, and everyone knows to check the family calendar before they plan events. I use my paper planner for EVERYTHING, but I RELY on our iCal family calendar as I plan things. I can see my daughter's photo shoots, the boys haircuts, my husband's meetings or travel schedule, boys' serving schedule, etc. - AND...so can everyone else! My dh checks it all the time, and my daughter regularly checks it as she plans things.
You can use the Cozi calendar in a similar way, I believe. Since we all have mac laptops and iPhones, iCal works better for us because I already know my way around iCal well, and can manage the calendar from my little "home base."  But...if the entire family didn't have iCal, or we were using a combination of tablets, laptops, computers, smartphones that crossed boundaries of windows, mac, android, kindle - I'd probably use something like the Cozi calendar because it would work in the same way and updates across all devices that have the app and works on any laptop/computer.

I don't have a smart phone but we love Google calenders.. you can make as many different calenders as you want.. and you can look at any combo of them.. you can share them with each person.. and they'll send you text message reminders.
Cozi didn't like it when things overlapped.

I use the calendar that comes with the iPad-iCal? 
My favorite app for household chores-management is HomeRoutines-simple, colorful, love it. I also dabble with Homeschool Helper but am lacking discipline in that department.

Last year I bought Paprika for 25$ on my computer and 5$ for iphones and ipads. DH was not happy that I was spending 30$ on apps, but I told him I never buy computer or video games (and he and the children do), and this was MY kind of game.  I have been faithfully using it for a year or so, and love it. I easily enter and edit recipes, make grocery lists and meals plans. DH likes it that he can access the grocery lists instead of getting home with the wrong thing and arguing about whether I told him wrong or he heard wrong.  I don't know how in compares to other apps (because I paid 30$ and am sticking to this one!) I know it does not have a real way to include prices, which I had wanted. Entering recipes is so simple, and I can email them in a flash. I like the way I can organize and edit and rate (and delete) recipes

I've done more digging around and reading and came across the ebook Paperless Home Organization. I think it was $4.99 and the code smallthings took 20% off. It walks you through how to use evernote, gmail and remember the milk. (all free.)
It's pretty amazing what you can do with these tools. I'm not sold on Remember the Milk yet--but I'm loving evernote.
