Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our laptop is on it's final days, I fear and I definitely need to replace it. Looking online leads to WAY too many choices. How does one know what to get? (I'm sure anything would be an upgrade from what we currently have. I think it's about a 15 inch screen, HP, 4gb memory with windows 7.)

Is anyone knowledgeable about such things and could provide some direction? I know praises are sung of macbooks, but are they really worth that much more than PCs? The Surface Pro 3 looks really cool read a review about it at Our Best Bites but those are pricey too and require the additional cost of the keyboard.

I really need it for basic things like email, online surfing and for kids writing reports, making presentations and doing some photo editing. Any suggestions on products or where to look? Thanks!

I am not a computer expert of any kind but I will say this: I so much prefer Mac over PC and felt it was worth the extra money. I bought a MacBook Air about 3 1/2 years ago. I have never had any serious problem with it. It is so easy and intuitive to use. My husband had to buy a PC with Windows 8 on it last year for school. It was very difficult to navigate and figure out and very frustrating for me to use the few times I had to use it.

If PCs are a better option for you, I'm sure you will find one to suit your needs just fine. But if you have the option to look at Mac, I would go to the Apple store and try them for yourself!

Best wishes,
Kelly

Are you members of Costco? My husband really prefers we look there first because their return policy and extended warranties are good. You can also get the square trade warranties on Amazon. It is very confusing, isn't it, to compare the features and prices?!!

We just cannot justify the cost of macs - but we are doing ok with Windows. You just have to do regular housekeeping - good virus protection, cc cleaner and malware bytes. Clear cookies, keep everything up to date. Make sure kids know never to click on links.

We have Toshiba laptop - bought for dd in 2009 for $299 in Walmart - still working well.

Staples had some great deals on Toshibas - under $400 which are good. We have had a good experience with Toshiba. I really dislike Windows 8 but we put the shell on which makes them easier to use.

With Windows laptops - we usually clean them up as soon as we get them - all the bloatware and unnecessary stuff. Then put on our own protection. The new Windows security suite for Windows 8 (free) - was Microsoft Security Essentials, is better than most paid virus protection.

We do have Costco--I'll have to check them out there. I think that's where we got our last laptop.

Marilyn--thanks for all the info.
