Does anyone have any good remidies for nausea and stomach pain caused from taking Aleve (and/or other pain meds)

I am going to try to back off taking some of the Aleve, but with more activity have needed to take more. This is pretty much all I am taking right now for pain 6 weeks after surgery. I am not sure that this is going to work.    However, the side effects of nausea and stomach pain (things I am prone to normally) have been hard to deal with too!

Any good remedies?

I’m assuming your are icing your hip? I’m thinking that would help with the inflammation....ask your doc. That doesn’t help with the Aleve issue.
I’m so sorry you are going through all of this pain! I have heard ginger is good for nausea....maybe treating it like you do pregnancy nausea and taking lots of small meals?

Yes! I am icing and using my TENS unit as much as possible for 'non-side effect' pain relief!

In a small way, it sort of feels like pregnancy nausea. However, I have never really found a good way to get over that! I just had to wait out 25 weeks and offer it up!

I feel really guilty, but sugar is the only thing that tastes remotely good right now. I have lost my appetite for the foods I normally like. Oh, it only feels guilty because it's Lent and everyone in my home has given up sweets or chocolate and I keep making my dh get me ice-cream or some like that.

I am just caught in the in-between stage where I am feeling better and doing more (if for no other reason that being stubborn and trying to get back to normal) which causes my leg to hurt more , etc.

I can't wait until Easter.....

4 Lads,
I have thought often of your kids through all of this. How hard it is to verbalize how you feel. And it's so hard to know if it's a side effect or something else. Then if it is a side effect can you life with the pain of not taking that med. It really is a vicious circle.

Betsy,
My husband can't take Aleve or Advil/Ibuprofen because of a bleeding disorder he has (Von Willebrands Disease). We looked into alternative pain meds and the following list is what we found. (My dh can't take Bromelain in concentrate because it is also a factor in clotting, but I'm mentioning it because it could be helpful for you.)

Tylenol - which isn't as helpful or effective as an ibuprofen product, but does give some relief.

Bromelain - which is a concentrated extract from pineapple which helps with inflamation.

Arnica gel - another homeopathic - this gel is something you'd rub directly on the affected area (so around your hip). My husband prefers gel, but there is a cream. The gel absorbs more quickly, but it's cold. The cream is heavier. The brand we use is Arnicare.

And...I thought maybe the side effects of nausea and stomach pain were a direct result of the Aleve. ?? Some people are very sensitive to those products in that way. Or were you saying that they're a side effect of the surgery that you're experiencing.

If the nausea is from the Aleve, you're probably already doing this, but taking it with a full meal on your stomach is supposed to help. If the nausea is something you're dealing with post-surgery, ginger capsules REALLY do help with nausea!

The ginger will help with the nausea but it's also an anti-inflammatory and combined with bromelain will work even better with that combination than the two separately.

Usually a milk product helps coat the stomach and helps with the meds not hurting you so much. Which is more likely why ice cream or chocolate is helping rather than the sugar. (though sugar does help with nausea)

As far as a healthy alternative that might help your stomach.. I'd try yogurt or oh what's that liquid yogurt type stuff called.. well whatever it is.. that. Even just a glass of milk may help protect your stomach.

Oh surgery.. and you've had nausea since? I found that treating it like messed up electrolytes and simply drinking gatorade or smart water for a day or so will help get that straight and take care of the nausea.. it also helps (but doesn't get rid) of pregnancy nausea.

You could try peppermint oil mixed with coconut oil rubbed over your belly area too.

We have started using apple cider vinegar for nausea. Kind of gross, but it works SO well. My sister can take a shot straight, but I have to water it down. I put a tablespoon or 2 in a glass of cold water, with a sweetener (a packet of stevia or spoonful of honey), a splash of vanilla, and lots of cinnamon. Tastes just like apple cider that way, and really helps upset stomachs.

If the meds are hurting her stomach, vinegar (any acid) might be painful.

ACV is actually supposed to help with stomach acid - people use it for heartburn and reflux also. Weird, I know. Here's one link about it: http://www.apple-cider-vinegar-benefits.com/vinegar-and-acid -reflux.html. I don't know exactly what about the Aleve causes stomach upset, so perhaps it would not apply here. Just thought I'd mention it!

NSAIDS can essentially cause sores on the stomach. Heartburn and reflux can be caused by not enough acid (slowing digestion down) so helping speed that up can solve those problems. Adding acid to a stomach with sores can be painful.

Thanks for all of the advice......

@Jodie, I have been fighting this somewhat since the surgery. But I am pretty sure it's related to the Aleve.

@Tracy, I love ACV tea! I would puke it I drank it straight....same nausea problem that I am dealing with.     I have been drinking some, because the family all had a stomach bug last week. I don't remember if it made it worse or not?

@Everyone, my Mom thinks I should take Zantax, Tums and Milk of Magnesia (yes, all of them) to prevent an ulcer AND switch to Extra Strength Tylenol? Any advice? My dh will be home late so it will be late before I can sent him to the store.....

ETA: I just want to say if I seem rather clueless, I am. I usually take the most natural approach or just deal with things. But, once you go down the path of surgery you are kind of beholden to meds. I had never taken aleve before this and I had in the first two weeks of surgery I had taken more Advil/Tylenol/Aleve than I had taken in my whole life.   I just feel like I fish out of water.

Well those will reduce acid and coat the stomach so it may help.. and try the tylenol.. you can overlap the nsaids with tylenol so if it's not managing the pain enough you can take the aleve again asap.

I've seen "morphine bomb" floating around pinterest using essential oils as pain relievers. Don't know if it works though. But it's 5 drops each of Frankincense, copiaba, and Idaho balsam fir in a vegetable capsule.
