Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sorry, this is a rant. So last night Dh and I were previewing the Olympic Opening Ceremony. I had a feeling that there we're be a lot we need to censor...and there was. The network and government intentionally sent openly gay representatives and they aren't missing any opportunity to bring that up.

But I also noticed the sour grapes attitude all through the ceremony....Russia should not have gotten this, they shouldn't be hosting, Putin is such a dictator, things aren't going to work. There were digs like when the one ring didn't open at the beginning something like "See, that's what happens when you take on something too big you can't handle." And then the historic part was a "kitsch" take on Russian history....their word, not mine. It was like they were waiting for everything to collapse.

And the digs on Putin! I'm not his fan, but there was this constant rhetoric about how this was all orchestrated, wrote and planned by him and that he rewrites the history books for schools, etc. He is a dictator in their eyes.

But I have to say what my president is saying about human rights and such regarding this is not what I believe and it's forcing down my throat.

I also thought there was this view of looking at the history through a democrat's eyes, and there were comments that were very revisionist--exactly what they accuse Putin of doing.

I just don't know how much my sons can watch. The gay thing is not something we are discussing here are these young ages. And it really saddens me that I have to. My mother didn't find out until she got married!

We had the same frustration here. It was a little hard to take. The idea that came across was that if you aren't in line with the West's progressive ideals that you are somehow backward and less than civilized.

I remember the Cold War Olympics, and we were fighting Communism....this is different.

The sound was all off for us and we couldn't hear them talking over the loud music. I was frustrated at the time, but now I'm glad we didn't hear it.

LOL, we had the sound off, too.

Putin did not look very happy, and I'm not sure why. The parts of the ceremony we did see were lovely.

The commentators' remarks were derided on Twitter (#NBCFail). Sadly, journalism in general seems to be following this trend of editorializing vs. reporting. Bob Costas has used his bully pulpit to make political statements in the past, and I'm sure we'll see more of it.

I wonder if there's a place to watch the Olympics online, broadcast by some other country's network?

We had the wonky sound also. DH has been trying to find an on line viewing source today, but no luck so far. NBC on line permits us about 30 minutes on lone viewing before we get booted off.

I thought the political talk could have been left out as well, also.

Didn't watch last night as we had another commitment, but my dh has already said he doesn't want to watch because of the agenda the media is slanting it to - it isn't about the athletes or the sport. He had watched on Thursday night and all the commentary is focused that way. Did you see the google doodle the last couple of days?

I'm with your dh. I've been saying that all along. The live events are less peppered with commentary, thank goodness. But this is worse than monitoring the commercials for sporting events.

Yes, that Google thing is very intentional and very upsetting.

The constant digs at Russia have wearied us too. I have enjoyed the Russian Policemen's choir though. Very whimsical which is not a word I usually associate with Russia!

Well...you'll aren't the only ones noticing.

Here is a article that I read this morning in Crisis Magazine: What Sochi News Coverage Can Tell Catholics

This is a good article making the same observations as you have and then relating it to what the media does to Catholics.

I am so VERY glad the Olympics are over.

Trying to watch them has left me with the firm conviction that our TV just needs to go.   Last night we tried to watch the closing ceremonies, and what was showing? An hour and a half of Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan.

We don't have cable or TIVO or anything like that. My poor dd wanted to see the skating, but what she saw for the whole two weeks didn't add up to an hour. She goes to bed by nine, and here in EST, coverage didn't start until 8, and then it was rarely skating.

And the commercials!
What is this: "I'm going to to kill someone every ten minutes!" ???
Seriously, NBC? A movie ad with that great line- plus graphics- played every hour when millions of kids are watching?
And that was only one of many ...

My TV is going to suffer a fatal accident in the near future. We can watch pretty much anything else on line but the games. I told dh we have two years to come up with another way to watch the Olympics.

Live streaming online. I tried this for figure skating, and it was fine. We could access the live streaming through NBC by signing in with our FiOS account login info.

The bad part is that you have to watch it live, and there are time zones to consider.

The good part - fewer commercials, and you can hit "mute." And no backstories.

That is great- will have to keep that in mind. We mainly wanted to watch in the evenings, after school and supper, etc, but I have learned my lesson!

I would rather watch live skating at 11 AM and do math at 6 pm for the 2 Olympic weeks than be hostage to NBC again.

With the summer games, we can watch more during the day since school will be out- that ought to help.

We ended up skipping a lot of it. It is so hard to get past the political agenda. We are very close to Russian people here and our priest friend said it is so hard. After the initial hoopla came out he sat down and read the actual laws surrounding it in cyrillic at the government website- he said the media has very much misrepresented what the laws say. Nothing like trying to impose western 'values' where they are not being asked for!

On the up note- I was getting a crown on one of my bad teeth this week and got to watch the Canadian men's hockey quarter final finish AND the figure skating (it was a long appointment). Nothing like being in the dental chair and having both the assistant and the dentist pause when the Canadians get near the goal!

For the most part we recorded on DVR,. My husband and I reviewed some of the events before showing to the boys, but we were also able to fast forward the commercials. Love that! When we can't FF it's a real drag!

We found daytime live events were easier to watch, with less previews.

But gosh, can we stop with the Cialis commercial?
