I am looking to get a Lego gift for a family with many kids that does not have any at all. What would be a good starting point for kids 5 and up? I prefer not to get "character-based" such as Star Wars - but rather just bricks etc so that they can use their imagination.

On a related note - we do not have any of the Lego idea books - are these any good?

Years ago I remember buying a tub of miscellaneous Legos at Target or somewhere. It wasn't that expensive, but we were broke and it was a splurge, but I couldn't resist: just. Legos. No. theme. I wonder if you could find such a thing now on Lego.com. I haven't looked in a long time, because at this point we are not too Lego-deprived . . .

Anyway, if you could find something like that, that's what I'd do.

Walmart has been having the tubs of legos (just blocks) for $15 off and on since "Black Friday."

Also there's a Lego Ideas bookon Amazon for $12.xx now. My kids have a different one and love it so I ordered that one for them for Christmas.

I purchased a couple of tubs of 650 Lego bricks at Walmart last year for $15 each. All of my children enjoy building things from their imagination with them.

We had a set for building a house that the kiddos liked. Had windows and doors and lots of basic pieces to use to build other things.

How dare you get a family started on Legos!    I would just get a tub. Otherwise the 3 in 1 sets are good because they have plans for three different things so something should be a hit with someone. My boys also like the Creator sets (usually houses). Those are all pretty generic as I would avoid the themes unless you know what they like

We've only ever bought lego off ebay, this way we've managed to snag big tubs of miscellaneous bricks, plates etc
