My 5 year old just got nice boots, markers/crayons/paper, and the Eeboo Build a Robot game for his birthday. However, his *favorite* gift was an old 5 gallon bucket full of rusty tools and scrap wood from a contractor friend 
I have series books that I've added to for each of the boys. I need to come up with new series for ds1 and ds2, but I'm still getting Snipp, Snapp, Snurr books for my 5 year old.
I'm also requesting Snap Circuits from the grandparents as a group gift.

Right after Halloween is a great time to buy dress-up clothes for boys (and girls)and sock them away for Christmas gifts. Even skipping the scary stuff there are plenty of costumes like knights, superman, construction workers and firemen (and princesses and fairies and tutus for girls). Can also pick up spare swords and capes, magic wands and funny hats and such.My littles always loved getting dress ups for gifts.

I made everyone from the 9 yr old down capes for Christmas last year.. because I made them they hold up really well and it's kinda fun because they're any sort of super hero they want to be.. we help the younger ones make up funny names like the "Zach Attack" or "Wonder Will".
I think this age is difficult because they're out in the dirt with rocks and sticks and a few cars and they're happy as a clam.
I'm thinking of maybe a couple of wood puzzles, and a flashlight, though a new plastic sled might be in the running too.

Swords and/or shields from the Etsy shop of a fellow Catholic homeschooling mom might toot the fancy of any young boy! If you have an artistic older sibling they might enjoy decorating one with markers or paint. My favorite's the Hobbit version, Sting.
Of course, any 5yo boy would dearly love rusty tools and dress up stuff! Thrift shops are a treasure trove for dress up, especially crazy hats and belts, the bigger the better! Our dc have always found the greatest belts in the women's section, of all places ~ camouflage, army green with tons of rivets, medieval style, even ancient coin belts!
This thread has me wistful for the days when dc were still young ~ ah well, that's why God sends us grandchildwuns! Besides, dc still love dress-up ~ they just incorporate it into more grown-up activities, like AirSoft shooting days and Regency Balls!

K'Nex and Legos are seconded here, they are played with every day by our boys. and our just turning six year old was enthralled by Gears!Gears!Gears!, no matter what other options we looked at on Amazon for Bday presents.

Nerf guns are popular here.
Planning on completing all my Christmas shopping in the next 5 weeks, I want to have all completed before Advent, so I can focus on preparing and relaxing for the baby, who is due two and a half weeks into Advent (but could well come after Christmas) Reading ideas here for me too.
Rather than sleds though we'll be looking at pool toys, soo hot.

The little boy down the way came over with a couple of MonsterJam trucks. I found some at Target on sale for $2-3 CDN. They are approx 10cm long and maybe about that high too, bigger than a dinky car. I thought that was a great deal, and got each of my younger sons two and put them away for Christmas. It was some big, bad fun in the sandbox!

Well I chatted with my mom and she's ordered some movies and is getting a "string backpack" as a free gift from them and she's offered it for my little guy.. I think I'll get a flash light and canteen to go in it and he'll get an "adventure backpack"
Might still need to get a sled though if we get snow

need ideas for 16 dd. Clothes are out - way tooooo hard to find anything these days and no way would I shop without her! I kind of miss the days it was easy to just shop toys!

My 16 yr old is getting
A case for her Kindle Fire with one of the "pens" for touch screen
a set of hard back books (2 in the set, bought used)
In her stocking will be
a set of books on kindle (wow factor here, they've been cost prohibitive and the kindle price is super reasonable)
another cord for charging kindle/phone/etc, the cords seem to be the weak link
fancy shoe laces
a toy sword (story to follow)
DEAL!!!!!!! I walked past the halloween stuff clearanced at the little local variety store.. it's 90% off and today I noticed SWORDS.. normally $4-9 each I got 12 for a total of about $8. I grabbed 6 for the boys.. and thought, you know these would fit in stockings (at under a $1 they're a reasonble stocking stuffer), I went back and grabbed 4 more for the girls. And then I looked at the 2 left on the shelf.. hmmm.. I grabbed them to put in dh's and my stockings. I joke that they're for self-defense but more importantly it gives us backups for any breakage.

I'm not sure that dd16 or dd12 will care much about the swords but I'll tell them they're for self-defense since everyone else got one.
I think I'll tie lots of curly ribbon to the hilts so they'll look more Christmasy sticking out the tops of stockings

My 17 dd is getting her own sewing machine for just this reason. She is always wanting to alter her clothes to fit just as she wants. She is graduating this spring (Abitur) and wants to do a 2 year apprenticeship in Home Economics before heading to the university. A sewing machine is an investment for sure, but something for life!
