Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I had booked this trip and then canceled when DH applied for the new job, but since that seems to be a dead end I am booking it again! Luckily the place we had chosen is still available for the time we wanted.

Has anyone visited Taos or lives near? I'm trying to plan a few things, but otherwise want to relax! I'm thinking of Santa Fe one day to go to the Georgia O'Keefe museum and the Loretto Chapel. I would also like to go to Chimayo.

Anything else maybe a little more kid friendly? These places will be all my 5 and 3 yo can handle .

I lived in Santa Fe in the 70's and we visit every few years. I love Santa Fe. There is so much to do there. I like Taos, too, but don't feel there is as much to do there - enjoy the art and Indian culture and the beautiful scenery.   I will post my things to do in Santa Fe area list, when I can retrieve it from another computer.

Bethany, I didn't get to this before we left on our trip. Back now and if you haven't already done your trip I will add my info and recommendations.

This really focuses on Santa Fe the most as that is where I am most familiar and since you indicated going down there, I want you to be able to make the most of your time. Santa Fe is one of my favorite places to visit. They call it the "City Different" and it really is unique.

In close proximity to Santa Fe are so many great things to see. Los Alamos has Bandelier Natl. Monument (Native American cliff dwelling & pueblo ruins) and the Bradbury Science Museum which is excellent Between Santa Fe and Chimayo there are many Pueblos. The Pueblos are really intriguing. If you can ever visit around the time of their feast day celebrations and dances it is a great cultural experience. More of the dances/celebrations are in summer and fall. Here is a calendar of the feast day celebration dates.

On to Santa Fe: One of the most amazing sites for families/kids is Rancho de las Golondrinas - fantastic living history museum, but only open April to October. Best time to visit even in those months is during one of the living history weekends (one per month during those months) that are listed on their calendar. I love this living history museum.

Famous staircase in the Loretto Chapel (no longer a Catholic chapel - now just tourist attractions).

Santa Fe also has the oldest church in the US, the oldest house in the US and some beautiful mission/adobe churches.

The Cathedral (St. Francis) is quite beautiful and historic.

The Plaza at the center of town is very interesting. During the day the Native American craftsmen sell their wares on blankets in front of the Palace of the Governors. The Palace of Governors is open as a museum. Very interesting. They have free nights there as well - Fridays 5-8 PM.

Museum of Spanish Colonial Art is a museum I love (love that style of art) and it has lots of hands on activities for the kids.

Georgia O'Keefe museum you already mentioned - free on Friday evenings I think. They have a family activity once per month.

Lots of other museums - though not all are kid friendly.

Cross of the Martyrs is a tribute to the Spanish settlers who were killed in the Pueblo revolt of 1680. It is a nice walk up the hill with historic plaques along the way, telling the history of Santa Fe. Great view of the city from top. There is an older cross monument north of town, I understand, but have never seen that one.

There is a great fossil deposit in Santa Fe. We have collected some great samples there. It isn't advertised anywhere; it is a location I know from my time there as a girl. The whole area around Santa Fe is full of fossil beds. The specific area where we have found marine fossils is along this trail - Santa Fe Canyon Preserve Trail. The last time we were there it wasn't so developed of a trail system. If you look at the trail map on the bottom right you will see Cerro Gordo Road make a sharp turn heading toward Upper Canyon Rd. There is a grey arrow along that portion of the road before you get to the parking lot. That is the general area where we go to look. There is a small turn out and we have parked along the road there, and we have parked in the lot and walked back to that area.

I notice from the linked trail map brochure, that they mark spot number 9 as an area to look for fossils. It sounds like a big deposit there of large fossil beds, which would be cool. We have never been to that area, but it looks like it isn't too far of a walk from the Randall Davey Audubon Center.

There's a nice basic children's museum in Santa Fe.
