Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I watched three episodes of season 1 of Call the Midwife last night. Delightful! Some sad moments, too, but I loved it.

I was really taken with the character of Chummy. Loved the learning to ride a bike part! Also loved the positive portrayal of the sisters. I hope this continues.

Has anyone else been watching? I see that it is already season 2.

I'm a fan! Season 2 is three episodes in and I'm still enjoying it.

I've been watching, too. I saw the first season, which they re-aired and I now have dvr'd to "rewatch." I saw the Christmas special. I have read Jennifer Worth's first book. And I am so enjoying this second season!!!

We have really enjoyed it. So far, I have found it to affirm many of the "life issues," which is a wonderful plus.

A super refreshing show... incredibly realistic deliveries too ( I read they have a whole bunch of prosthetic babies they use... which explains why the infants actually look like infants and not the 6 month olds Hollywood normally uses).   Love the positive religious notes. I find it affirming for me in our home birthing decisions too. A great series all around!

I really like the show a lot! I do think there are some subtle references to the need for artificial contraception (there was a line in the first episode specifically that made me think that), but I love how it affirms the love these people have for their children inspite of number, difficulty, poverty, etc...

Yes, there was a line in one of the recent shows as well. But so far those kinds of comments have been portrayed as the opinion of a particular character in that episode and not necessarily the statement of the show, if that makes sense. BUT I must say I am just waiting for the abortion-to-save-the-mother's-life episode, which feels inevitable with a show like this! I guess we'll see...

Actually, I read something, rather recently, about Jennifer Worth being angry that a doctor who performed abortions stated that they were not painful or something to that effect, and she knew quite the contrary... Oh, I found the quote on wikipedia, of all places. And it isn't about a doctor, but a writer.    Being Wikipedia, I wish I had an actual source for her criticism, but here is what they wrote:

"Worth was highly critical of Mike Leigh's 2004 film Vera Drake, for depicting the consequences of illegal abortions unrealistically. She argued that the method shown in the movie, far from being fairly quick and painless, was in fact almost invariably fatal to the mother."

I will try to look further to see what I can find.

Well, I had to look no further than the footnote for that section! Oy! Here is a portion of the article, written by Jennifer (Lee) Worth:

"...In 1967 the Abortion Act was passed, and abortion was no longer illegal. When I was a gynaecology ward sister at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson hospital in London, I was sometimes asked whether or not I approved of it. My reply was that I did not regard it as a moral issue, but as a medical issue. A minority of women will always want an abortion. Therefore, it must be done properly...."

And here is the link to the whole article.
