Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have an old version of Excel, 2003, so there are some functions not available that I find online in tutorials.

I have a checkbook register in excel with simple calculations of register totals when debits/credits are entered. I also have a category field I populate with a drop down list (list kept on another sheet). Same goes for the type of transaction (drop down list with income, expense, etc.).

I want to generate a report that sums the $ for each category for a specific time period. I have tried a pivot table, but I cannot get it to filter the date (this is where the old version is a pain, newer version allows to filter a range of dates). I have also tried to use formulas, nesting sumifs and ifs, but cannot get the date to filter with an AND formula. Ugh, I'm stuck.

Here's the logic that I need translated into a formula:

If the date is between "beg date" and "end date", then sum (a range of cells minus a range of cells) for a specific category.

Anybody want to help?

Still stuck . It seems I have been out of the loop for too long and my brain is having fits about thinking in a logical fashion. Anybody know of a friendly excel forum?

My husband can definitely help you. I'll have him answer your question when he's home at lunch.

Just asked him: "She will need to use the conditional sum wizard. She can install the add-on if it's not already installed." Does that help? If you need more specifics, let me know and I'll have him write out a full response his evening.

Thank you, and your husband!    That's exactly what I needed, and now that I have the formula I was able to tweak it and copy it to create my full report. Thanks for the help!

Ah, the light bulb of understanding is such a wonderful feeling!
