Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

a ginger bread house from a kit?

Can these be eaten? Are they supposed to be eaten?

I am of the opinion that they are decorative only, but they do have nutritional info on the package. But then again... why would you want to eat something that's been sitting on the counter for awhile?

I picked up a ginger bread kit on sale at Michaels.. the one with the mini-village. It comes with four houses, which is great, as everyone at my house got to decorate his/her own, and the smaller houses are way easier to glue together with icing and don't fall apart.

But my ds wants to eat his. He's been bugging me for several days. And I've said no, but then I thought... well, maybe some people do eat theirs.
I mean, people decorate their trees with cookies and then eat those at Christmas time. Hmm....

Yes, you can eat them, but they really don't taste very good! My son would eat some of the candy off, and maybe take a bite of the cookie, but that's it. I'm actually hoping to do a made-from-scratch one next year so that we can enjoy eating it!

Depends on how picky your tastebuds are. Dunked in a glass of milk and they aren't too bad

Yes! We've eaten them here, esp. the more sweet toothed members of the family. I have discovered a decorating kit I personally like better because I like to eat them, the Rice Krispie Treat house kits. However dd likes to get a gingerbread house kit yearly, and hounds me to get to eat it, too.

I've never seen the Rice Krispie treat house kits! Where have you bought them?

I always liked making our own houses from graham crackers (not as heavy as gingerbread).

I have gotten the Rice Krispie treat houses both at Walmart and Aldi. They are only one piece, made in a mold, not a whole house to put together, but they ARE fun.

I love the idea of graham cracker houses, but have never had luck with them staying together, is there a secret to it Jodie?

I have friends who traditionally eat theirs over many days dunked in their afternoon tea since it is stale.

Pilgram, you need a thick frosting that hardens while out, not a butter cream (my favorite) that will get softer being out because the butter in it softens. It's been way to long since I did these to remember a name for the frosting.. I know royal icing hardens up well but I don't know if it can be applied thickly enough to hold up the walls.. that might be it.. or maybe one of the cooked frostings.

thought I'd add that the Rice Krispie House kits come with the materials to make two little houses, which was nice last year as the 2 kiddos old enough each could then make their own decorated treat.

My dd made one of the gingerbread kits last year and was so proud of it. Later in the day her two brothers, thinking it was just a fancy treat, helped themselves to sections of the roof. She was so upset! They did not get sick or anything, but they sure had an angry sister!
I like the rice krispy house idea. Does anyone know if they are GF? Gingerbread (homemade) is one of my favorite Christmas treats, but there will be none for us this year (unless I find a good GF recipe! )

I don't know if the kits are gluten free, but here is a recipe and instructions for making a full-sized Rice Krispie House That looks pretty easy and fun, and could easily be made gluten free, I know I've seen gluten free marshmallows in stores.
