Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I need some NAME-ideas for a little area in our new house. CALLING ALL WORDSMITHS!!!

:: DH used to mountain climb, and he has a few things that are special to him that he likes to display.                 (oh...was that me eyerolling??? ...it couldn't have been...I would never do such a thing.. )

:: For Christmas I want to have a PLAN for these things in an area TBD. (I have someone helping me with this, because if it was me doing it, I would just SLAP all this stuff up there just to get it done and out of my way...I would hate it, and then it would come right down, and I would declare myself completely incapable of doing any sort of "decorating" and shove it in a box and label it!)....but that is not going to happen this time...I want it to look like this!

:: I want this area to have a NAME.   I want to make one of those distressed/vintage wall-plaques with this NAME on it....or more likely have an ETSY gal make it for me...being the home decorating idiot that I am.

The only thing I can think of is Mountain Madness.   But, that's not good enough...I want more options!!!!!! Can you help?

Here are the vintage things that will be displayed:
:: snowshoes
:: ice ax
:: frame from a backpack
:: cramp-ons
:: ropes
:: indian and land-rush photos
:: gone hunting sign
:: deer antlers
:: walking sticks
:: a couple of pictures from his own various summits
:: fishing net (this is actually mine)

In case this is helpful:
Dictionary of Climbing Words

:: His name is Pete. Last name: Gallus

Other things that may get the creative juices flowing:

:: Mt. McKinley (Denali) the word DENALI is a very popular word!!! DENALI DREAMS??

:: the word SUMMIT is often used in our house for obvious reasons.

:: Arete, Alpine, Ascend, Belay, Carabiner (also a word often used), couloir, Glacier, Glissade, pickets, rappel, slack, traverse, altitude, UP, Snow, ice, Crevice, peak, camp, base camp,

:: outdoor, woods, forest, sky, peak,

:: Vintage Climbing Gear

:: I want it to be strong, but not braggy (which is why I don't like "Denali Dreams"
:: nothing to insinuate that he'd "rather be climbing"...b/c I'm completely sure that he'd rather be selling anti-corrosion-wax-tape to utility companies than getting to the top of Mt. McKinley!

Lest you think me "thoughtful" for doing this...don't. It's strictly for selfish reasons.    He has this crazy idea that just because we now live in Idaho, that we are going to hang lodge-like-things all over the house. Sigh. So, I have to be proactive about this one.    And, make this stuff look really good in a HALLWAY instead of the living room.

Thought you would all appreciate this.....About the twentieth time he asked me where would a good wall for the snowshoes, I threatened to paint all his deer antlers WHITE and use them as Christmas decoration on the mantle!.

IDEAS??????

What is your house like? I ask, because we live in a split, and our family room is a finished half, walk out basement in knotty pine. When we first moved and were talking about that being the "man cave," decorating it in *my* husband's bachelor stuff, which is nautical, a friend christened it "the lower deck."

Our office is in the center oft the house, at the immediate top of the stairs up from the main living area, so I think of it as "the eagle's nest" though perhaps crow's nest would be more in keeping with our nautical theme

Is there a particular area you are considering? Is it up or down in relation to the living space? A foyer? A nook? (or cranny ) Is there something climbers call a place of respite where the terrain changes after a time of harder climbing where they can pause before going on? A resting place?

Cove might be effective if you do indeed use a hallway.

The Climber's Cove?
Carabiner Cove?

Or
Gallus Gap?
Pete's Peak?
Carabiner Cranny?

That's all I've got. I'll ask dh when he gets up. He's far more clever about such things.
If it is upstairs, you might simply call it The Summit, though I guess you want something a little more clever.

Well it's not real imaginative but

Gallus Base Camp

Gives both the idea that you always come back to it but that you still go out and do more climbing from there.

Quote:
The European alpine regions, in particular, have a network of mountain huts (called "refuges" in France, "rifugi" in Italy, "cabanes" in Switzerland, "Hütten" in Germany and Austria, "Bothies" in Scotland, "koèa" in Slovenia, "refugios" in Spain and "hytte" in Norway, "cabane" in Romanian). Such huts exist at many different heights, including in the high mountains themselves – in extremely remote areas, more rudimentary shelters may exist.

Hut may be a good word to use here?

Pete's Hut?

For a hallway... chimney or crevasse?

Here's a longer list of words

STILL obsessing about this and getting close to making a decision!!!! Gotta hurry so the sign is done by Christmas!

I'm leaning toward Pete's Peak....but LOVE Gallus Base Camp. So, thinking about naming the mudroom as "Gallus Base Camp" which would be fun!

Also, thinking on a name for the house/property, etc.....Angie's previous thread was fun for that too!

More later....

THANK YOU, ladies!!!!!!

What about Peak City? You could maybe make the sign to look like an old fashion road sign with an arrow? Or, 1 mile?

My ridiculous sign shipped out today!!!!

Gallus Base Camp    !!!@#$%^%$#@$%^&^%$#@

It's navy with cream lettering.

And, I have to tell you that my little "base camp" area actually ended up being IN THE LIVING ROOM!      A little corner in the living room! I can't WAIT to show it to you when it's complete....it actually looks really neat and we both love it!
