Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Review of Brief Light by SallyT (4Real Member)
(can be purchased at LuLu.com)

I want to begin this review by saying I am not a much of a poetry reader. During my education it was impressed upon me that Science and Math were the supreme subjects to learn. Sadly, it was not untl college that I had my first experience with Romantic Poets. And, although I was enthusiastic to embrace this new language, I found it hard and confusing. So, it was never something I tried again until much later in my life.

Now has a homeschooling mother I read poetry with my children often. I love the poetry that we have read in the early years. I feel like I need to say this in a whisper, but I get “this” type of poetry! As a family we have embraced our lessons.....but until today, I have never read a poetry book on my own, for me.

When I heard of the release of the book Brief Light I eagerly ordered it.....but I secretly feared that I when I read it I wouldn’t get it.   I am happy to say, that it spoke to my heart. There are so many lovely works in this book and it seems as if I find a common thread of almost all of these poems in my own life.

The poem STILL BIRTH was probably the most moving. I cried real tears as I silently read this poem. I am thankful to say that I haven’t experienced this first hand, but through friends and my own experiences in Mothering I could relate and understand.

Another favorite is FOR YOU, about a child instance on knowing if they are your favorite and a Mother’s tireless answer of love.

So, to conclude I leave you with a quote from Darwin. And encourage you to find a space in your life each day for poetry, music and art, beginning with Brief Light.

Letter by Charles Darwin, late in his life, to a friend:
“Up to the age of thirty, or beyond it, poetry of many kinds, such as the works of Milton, Gray, Byron, Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley, gave me great pleasure…But now for many years I cannot endure to read a line of poetry;…My mind seems to have become a kind of machine for grinding general laws out of large collections of facts…and if I had to live my life again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week…The loss of these tastes is a loss of happiness, and may possibly be injurious to the intellect, and more probably to the moral character, by enfeebling the emotional part of our nature.”
Charles Darwin: His Life Told in an Autobiographical Chapter & in a Selected Series of his Published Letters, Edited by Francis Darwin. London: William Clowes and Sons, Ltd.1892, p. 51.

Any time -- I'd love to talk about poetry.

I will confess that I did this book through Lulu.com, which is a self-publishing venture, though I do have a track record in publishing via print magazines, which helps, and own enough poetry books published by small literary presses to know what a quality book looks like.

But Lulu is great: unlike a "vanity" press, you're not paying someone to publish your book. It's print-on-demand, meaning that you don't have stacks of unsold books sitting around (which is the problem traditional publishers also face, which is why you have remainder tables in bookstores). The author does have to wear multiple hats -- not just author, but also book designer, publicist, etc. -- but this really isn't that hard. Poetry is not a huge seller under the best of circumstances, so I haven't had really high expectations with regard to fame and fortune!

I would add also that if you have a child who writes (or multiple children) and would like to publish a book/magazine of that writing, this is a great resource for that kind of thing.

Anyway, thank you very much! And again, yes, I would be happy to talk about poetry and publishing, especially in magazines. I'd especially encourage anyone interested in this kind of thing to read Dappled Things, the Catholic literary journal. If you're interested in publishing your work, the single best thing you can do is read literary journals, to see what's being published, and Dappled Things has the double benefit of being both committed to literary and intellectual excellence and committed to the faith.

Sally
