between an IPad and an IPhone5 , which would you pick? And what about the KindleFire?
My 50th b'day is during Christmastide and I am considering asking for an electronic present... something worthy of hitting the half century mark
In the past my presents have almost always been kitchen related - mixer, breadmaker, le creuset...
I almost hesitate to take this step . I feel like when and if I make this decision I am crossing some kind of invisible threshold , never to return...
Do I need this?
Which would you choose?
What are the advantages of each?
TIA

Do you already have a smart phone? The plan would probably cost close to $80 a month. That is my biggest barrier in getting a smart phone. I have an iPad that I love, and it is just wifi, so there is no monthly cost on top of our regular Internet (we already had wireless).

I would choose the iPad.
We have an iPhone 4 upgraded to ios6
I would rather the iPad. It's bigger and so many different features to use
We just use the wifi feature not the sim connection

I'd choose the iPad (in fact, I'm wishing someone would give me one), though a Kindle Fire would be a hot competitor in my mind.
Not interested in a smartphone. Like Lindsay, I don't want to pay for the plan, and I lose my pay-as-you go phone constantly as it is. But a device that we could use for school -- YEAH!

I don't have an iPad, so I can't compare. But I love my iPhone. I like having something portable, being able to use when I'm on the road or running errands. Dh and I really use them, I pray my Divine Office, Mass readings, use as my main camera, read books, use for navigation, looking up things, and then the basic email, texting, and phoning.
I'm not at the stage to use electronic devices for my boys, so I can't answer that aspect, either. I like having this personal device instead of an iPad that I'd have to vie for the use of it.

If you are leaning towards a personal device like Jen describes but still don't want the commitment of a monthly plan, the iPod Touch is pretty much an iPhone without the phone part. It just works off of wifi.

Just to clarify... Does an Ipad do everything an Iphone does without the phone? Especially those apps mentioned above.
I do not plan on sharing

Yes, the iPad should do all that. I don't know how easy it is for the camera.
My Mom does the iPod touch like Lindsay described.

I have an older nokia cell phone. It is funny that I would even consider a fancy phone at all, as I am always handing it to my children to change the tone to vibration or send sms... I have never even sent an sms myself. I can barely retrieve messages. I just have never made the time to play around with it.
Since my youngest has diabetes I really need to be available all the time. I can't afford to forget my cell or not hear it/feel it.
The price of the iphone is daunting

I have an iPad! Amazing! I knit and crochet, so it's a gift from dh for my patterns. He skype calls me on it at his lunch! Love! I got a subscription to my favourite crocheting mag on it. It takes pictures which are rather nice, has awesome speakers to listen to Ave Maria radio when I'm baking bread or making supper. I just love this thing!

FaceTime is where you can talk face to face with another person who has the option available on there tablet or phone.
It' should be in the contacts

You don't have to go strictly with Apple products either.
I have an Acer Tablet that I use where ever there is free Wi-Fi. I use my Netflix account on it and check blogs. I have a Kindle app on it, so I can also use it as an e-reader. I also have Nook on there, but it's not as easy to transfer books onto as Kindle.
My husband just got a Galaxy smart phone, and we have unlimited data on our new T-mobile plan for $20 a month.
They both use Android.
I think it's just a matter of if you want a phone, too, and how much your data plans would cost for a smart phone.

I'll chime in since I have a new Kindle Fire. It's not on par with a tablet, but it allows me to surf the web, read books, stream videos, play with apps, load documents (free books I find not in Kindle formats), games, email, and a few other things. It does not have a camera for traditional picture taking, but it does have a camera so that you can do Skype. You can take pictures it as well, but it's awkward.
It works off of wifi, but once you have items loaded you do not need to be connected to the wifi.
There is no phone capabilities.
For me, it's a good fit and lots cheaper than an IPad. It was also a present, so I did not get to choose. From my understanding, it's not quite a replacement for a tablet (tablets have more memory I think and can do some things that a typical PC can do).
No, you don't need this, but it can be fun! And, I use it for some free books in our curriculum.
Here's a comparison of Ipad and Fire.
