Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Okay, so I signed up for Pinterest because, well, everybody's doing it , but I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be doing. Help?

You can start to search and explore different interests that you have. If you have Facebook, you can follow your friends boards. I thought we had a thread here somewhere about following each other and I know there is a 4real forums board too.

PM me and you can start to follow me:)

I can't seem to find the thread for Pinterest help, but the 4Real one is 4RealHomeEd.

I "pin" also, but it goes in spurts.

What kind of help do you need?

I have been an on-again-off-again Pinterest user, it' fun to browse, but there is so much stuff.

Occasionally I'm just a lurker if I have a mindless moment, but much more often I hop on if I'm looking for something in particular (you can also pin items from around the Internet onto your boards). For example, we haven't landscaped our new property yet, so I look for ideas, I might search for "garden-scapes", or "northwest vegetation", or "backyard patios". If I see something that I like, I'll pin it to my corresponding board... Just like tucking the idea away for when I'm ready to use it.

Same with school items, if I'm searching for Autumn craft ideas for young children, I'll search for just that. I'm on a restrictive diet, so I also do searches for meal ideas, and if I come across a meal idea on a different website, I can always pin it to one of my boards as well. Your pins don't have to always be generated by Pinterest itself.

There are a good many wonderful Catholic boards to follow as we'll, those always have worthwhile things to see.

I also pin clothing that I like too. Home decor ideas are fun too.

I try not to post anything that I genuinely know I'll never do, use, or take seriously... It just clutters things up and I'm trying to actually keep my Pinterest use to "useful!"... But that's not to say that I don't joy seeing other people's eccentric pins . .. My ideas on how to best use this space seem to be evolving.... I have enough real-life clutter, so creating more clutter online is counter-productive (yet, this site does have so much good potential!).

Here are a couple of earlier threads about using Pinterest and our 4 Real account:

I'm fairly regular at stopping by Pinterest a couple times a week. I use recipes I've pinned quite frequently. Becky, you'll have to let us know which "Becky Parker" you are since there are quite a few.

I use Pinterest quite a bit as well. I use it a lot for finding project ideas (arts, crafts, science, etc.), as well as other homeschool ideas and inspiration. The more people you follow, the more pins will show up for you. Over time, I've managed to start following a lot of people who pin things that I like or might be useful to me - but I didn't make a specific effort to make that so. I follow a lot of people I am "friends" with, either IRL or online. And I pin things I see on other blogs and websites as well.

It took me a while of browsing it now and again before I really "got it" and was able to make it a useful tool for myself. Just play around with it, find some people to follow and see where it leads. I find it a helpful tool for organizing ideas visually, rather than just a lengthy list of bookmarks in my browser.

I also freely admit I use it for a little mental downtime, sort of how I use Facebook and message boards. I find it very relaxing to sit at my computer for 10 or 20 minutes, sip a cup of tea, and poke around online .

Here is my Pinterest page.

Well how I use it reflects where my mind is at present I also follow a few friends and smile cause I can tell where my friends minds are too, ie friend was just madly pinning party plans, I know a birthday is coming up. I'm building so have separate boards for that, when I was selecting paint for exterior I had boards for that. I just created a board for 'a book, and activity' can you guess where my planning is at present?

How you organise your boards I think reflects how you think, or perhaps how many pins you have ie I used to have a home ed board but got so many pins I separate into subjects. mmm perhaps showing will help. basically you use it to pin what appeals to you for whatever reason, like a visual bookmark.

Well, right now I'm the one with nothing on her boards yet!

Thanks for the help! I have a bazillion bookmarks on my computer for things and I was thinking this could be a way to organize them all visually? Can I do that? So if I have a link to a great blog post about, say, highschool or history, can I pin it to my board on pinterest? Does the person who wrote about the idea have to be on pinterest for me to do that? Is this a really dumb question?

Just re-read and found the answer to one of my questions. Thanks Chris.

Yep, you've got it - bascially it is like bookmarking with a picture instead of just linking to the page. So when you pin something, you select an image that serves as the visual for that link. Then you can go back to it later, click on your pin, and it will take you back to the source of the pin - the website, blog, etc.
