Some of you might have heard I had quite the freezer mishap the other day. Well it looks like we are in the market for a new one. Not where I wanted to put my money right now.

I remember seeing a thread here one time last year where suggestions were made for types and brands of freezers, but I can't seem to locate it.

Does anyone remember that thread and/or can anyone recommend a freezer they like (or even just features they like)?

Our current one is an upright, and I'd kind of like to stick with that style; it sits in the basement in a built-in so I'd like to make use of that space.

But really, I'm open to any suggestions including why a chest freezer might be better if that's what you have found ...

We had a chest freezer and I did not like it. Perhaps if I had 2 so that meat after butchering in the fall could stay in there, it might be practical.
I just did not like reaching down and I found that I "lost" food in the bottom. I did try to use bins but they were plastic and got brittle and broke.
PLeased with my upright and we try to follow my MIL's habit of locking it after each use. The extra step prevent unanticipated defrosts.

Thanks for starting this thread. I am the only homeschooling mom with a largish family that I know that STILL does not have an extra freezer...Dh keeps saying we need to clean out the garage before we can buy one!
We were going to just buy the cheapest chest freezer at Costco but now I am wondering if an upright would be better...they look more expensive, though. The cheapest one I found was here.
And it's got a manual defrost--is that a big deal?

Here in Sacramento, we have a yahoo group called Freecyclers.

People actually give their stuff away for free...

Now, one must be careful because what is another man's treasure is usually my dh's trash... and frankly, sometimes another's purging can translate into yours...

The point: be careful, but maybe your area has a similar group and you can find an upright? What about Craigslist?

Just an idea coming from a spendthrift, frugal wanna buy new wannabe

We have an upright that is 18 years old. It's manual defrost. I don't think it's a big deal. I do it twice a year beofre we get a side of beef. I just let the freezer dwindle to almost nothing and then I let it melt. I remember my mom sticking the electric frying pan in there during the defrosting. Not sure why she did that...
Not sure why she had an electric frying pan, actually .

I have a basic, no frills freezer and I've never wanted for anything more, but boy am I glad I have it!

I have a Frigidaire freezer, upright, from Home Depot. I can't remember what I spent on it, but I'm sure less than $300. It looks a lot like the one in Jennifer's link, but no basket at the bottom. We've had it for 5 years and are very happy with it. It is manual defrost though.
