Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi all!

I have a large dining room table that is just over 100" long and I need to cover it so I can keep it clean and dry as we do EVERYTHING all day on it...school, art work, etc...and I have toddlers (need I say more?)

I remember a thread about oil cloth...can you still get this without spending an arm and a leg? At my local fabric store I purchased just over 3yds of "oilcloth" that was really just leather-looking vinyl. It looked nice and lasted a year but...I am concerned about off-gassing.

What should I do??

Off-gassing question aside (since I have NO idea about this), here's an option.

My MIL uses a clear plastic table covering over her tablecloth and wipes it off after every meal. It drives my dh NUTS because of the way it hangs wonky, bunches up, etc...

However, if you already have some cloth or a tablecloth you would like on your table, I'll bet you could do Jen's oilcloth thing with the clear vinyl over the pretty fabric, taking care to trim the fabric and the vinyl so that it wasn't too bunchy and offered just enough for effective stapling with the vinyl extending just enough beyond the cloth so its stapling didn't have to go through both layers.

This would be much cheaper to replace the top layer should it, too, wear out in a year's time than doing a different oil cloth.

I just came back from Joanns with our plastic table cover! We have a 10 foot table and we have a padding over it and then an "all the time" table covering. This is a linen cloth that is exactly the size of our table with no over hang. Over that we lay a plastic covering that I buy at joanns every 6-8 months. I wait until the coupons come and I get 3 1/2 yards and it hangs just right. It is not perfect but it helps so much especially with spills and it comes in the huge rolls so no sewing or hemming is involved.

We have been using this for a very long time at our house, literally at least 20 years since this is my childhood table, and it works great.

BTW there are many choices of gauge with this plastic. I get a medium gauge so it hangs but is still thick. When it was just older kids at home before we had children, my mom got a very light gauge and that hung fabulously better but I don't dare since we cut stuff on that table.

I use the Marine Vinyl at Joann's.

We have had ours for years, with extream abuse and it has held up perfectly. I now need to replace it, though, because a toddler (who shall remain nameless) attacked it with a fork and won!

Direction For How I Make My Vinyl Table Cloth
::What I do is lay out the piece on a table and take a sharpie and trace the edges on the bottom of the fabric.

::Take the fabric off the table and flip over onto the floor. Add about 5 inches (depending on the table) to the sharpie mark of the original size.

::Cut out the on the second line.

::Get some 1/2 inch elastic, tack the end of the elastic near the edge. Stretch the elastic and sew with a large zig zag stitch. Continue until you get back to the start of the elastic.

::Place back on the table.

::Also, Joann's also has some heat resistant fabric too. On my wood kitchen table I have that between the table and my vinyl cloth.

Oh, and make sure you have your 40% off coupon when you buy the vinyl.
