Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So, my husbands job has been pretty yucky for the last year or two and we really want a change. There is a job opening in Denver which he is very qualified for and he has a connection to (which always helps ). We would have to move ourselves which would be a large expense, but we're really tired of things here.

Tell me what is great about Denver and Colorado. We've only visited and for me that was many years ago and brief. I've already looked at taxes and they seem pretty favorable. Texas has no income tax, but our property and sales taxes are high!. This has concerned me lately because I worry about when we retire (which is still along ways away) our taxes will remain the same even though our income would drop significantly.

How's the homeschooling requirements? Texas has no reporting, so I'm pretty spoiled.

Oh, one more! Utilities? They are pretty high in Texas.

Anything else I need to know would be very appreciated!

MaryM lives there. What else could you possibly need?

And I hear she puts on a fabulous homeschool conference.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Ha ha, Jenn...

Bethany, would be happy to talk with you. Only have a minute now but will answer more fully soon. Denver is a GREAT place to live - and super Catholic diocese! Homeschooling requirements aren't bad though there is more requirements than Texas.

What is great about Colorado:
Weather - LOTS of sunshine, not as much snow as everyone thinks. Usually snows and melts fairly quickly in snowiest months. We have generally beautiful sunny winters (not gray) and often mild temps. Low humidity so summers while they can get hot are really generally nice and moderate - cools down in evenings. Few bugs.

Beautiful scenery. Majestic mountains. Big sky. The song, America the Beautiful, was inspired here.

Great place to be Catholic (in the west anyway). Our old archbishop Chaput (and Cardinal Stafford before him) invited/welcomed lots of vibrant groups and apostolates and programs here. And our newly appointed archbishop (Aquila) who will be installed in a few weeks is going to follow well in that tradition.

Very outdoor and recreation oriented. Lots of recreational opportunities, great parks and greenways. Ranks high nationally for bike trails. People are very health and fitness conscious.

Denver is a big enough city (shopping, cultural venues, professional sports teams, etc) but still feels close to the rural/outdoorsy atmosphere.

Homeschooling law: I think it is considered in the "middle" as far as oversight/regulation. These are the three options for homeschoolers in this state:
1.Home school statute CRS - 22-33-104.5 Requires notice of intent 14 days before homeschooling and annually thereafter. Notice must include names, ages, residence, and hours of attendance of children taught. Testing or other evaluation is required in odd grade years.

2.Enrolled under Colorado "independent school" but teaching occurs in the home. This usually requires a fee of $30-$200 per year paid to the independent school. (Umbrella school) Avoids testing or filing requirement.

3.A parent may teach children at home as a licensed teacher in the state of Colorado. No testing or filing required.

Utilities:

Don't know. I have heard that Texas is really high so I know we are lower. They say we are lower than the national average. But we aren't super low either. Don't know how to compare. Kilowatt hour on last bill was .046 cents but then there are all those fees and taxes.

Hope that helps.

Would LOVE to have you here...
